Research and Policy Intern
The International Hydropower Association (IHA) is the global voice of sustainable hydropower. It is a non-profit international membership organisation, whose mission is to deliver renewable energy systems, freshwater management and climate change solutions by advancing sustainable hydropower.
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual ready to take on the exciting role of an intern in the Research and Policy Team. IHA’s internships provide a tremendous opportunity to gain first-hand experience with the issues, organisations, and individuals across the world who are leading in the struggle against climate change.
As well as monitoring the sector and managing our global hydropower database, the Research and Policy Team’s work covers a broad range of topics such as: climate change, markets and finance, freshwater management, and zero carbon electricity systems. Project work includes the Global Alliance for Pumped Storage (GAPS), and ReHydro.
The successful candidate will work primarily to support the pumped storage and modernisation working groups. The modernisation working group is newly formed and will support the development of tools for aging hydropower fleets which still provide immense amount of renewable energy. The pumped storage working group was started to support the development of a tool to enable de-risking of projects. It meets once a quarter to advance pumped storage and support the preparation of documents and technical information for GAPS, the intergovernmental alliance.
GAPS has amassed over 60 governments and international agencies to advance the deployment of pumped storage, the essential element to supporting renewable energy and ensuring energy security in an era of rapid transition to wind and solar power. It is chaired by former Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull.
The Intern will also support in the lead-up to the World Hydropower Congress. This three-day event takes place in Sydney, Australia, in April 2027, and will bring together global leaders to support energy security and develop sustainable hydropower. This is a unique opportunity to assist in developing the programme, messages, and actions for the Congress.
Job description
As the intern for the Research and Policy team, you will play a key role in supporting the development of IHA’s working groups as well as IHA’s international events. You will report to a senior member of IHA staff and work closely with key participants including members, governments and other NGO stakeholders. The job will involve the following key tasks and responsibilities:
Key tasks:
· Support the organisation and management of GAPS and sector working groups.
· Participate in meetings and briefings, take and distribute minutes and follow up on actions as required.
· Assist with communications and driving engagement for IHA campaigns.
· Support the research of IHA in the preparation of policy and industry papers.
· Participate in the organisation of in-person World Hydropower Congress sessions and online webinars.
· Contribute articles for IHA’s website and publications such as the annual World Hydropower Outlook.
· Support with IHA membership growth and value of membership.
Essential skills and attributes:
· Knowledge of international, renewable energy, or climate policy.
· Have basic knowledge or experience in hydropower.
· Strong administrative and project management skills.
· Proven experience in a similar or relevant professional role.
· Excellent written communication, verbal and interpersonal skills.
· Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage workload and prioritise effectively to meet deadlines.
· High attention to detail and work with accuracy.
· Adaptability and eagerness to learn new skills.
· Team player with the ability to build strong working relationships.
· Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and Teams.
· Good experience with use of AI tools for drafting.
· Applicants should have completed any current academic studies.
Desirable skills and attributes:
· Experience of working in a membership organisation or association.
· Experience of arranging online and in-person events including webinars and workshops.
· Exhibit a strong interest in and understanding of global energy, water, and climate challenges.
· Additional language(s), especially, Chinese, Spanish, French, Portuguese, or Russian.
· Possible international travel required.
Remuneration: £28,860 - £31,000 per annum (pro-rata) dependent on experience
Hours per week: 37.5 (Monday to Friday)
Contract: Fixed term, 6 months with possibility to extend
Location: Canary Wharf, London and hybrid (min 2 days in the office)
