About Indigo
Indigo Ag transforms on-farm regenerative agricultural practices into durable new revenue streams for farmers and agribusinesses, creating a more resilient world in which farmers thrive as they sustainably feed the planet. Since 2013, Indigo’s mission has revolved around on three key principles:
- Helping farmers enhance their profitability and the health of their soil
- Improving the quantity, quality, and traceability of the food available to consumers
- Protecting the environment by reducing pollution and conserving water
Our people advance the partnerships, science, and technology needed to grow the future of sustainable agriculture. We advance our mission through a diversity of expertise, from Fortune 500 to academia to tech start-ups.
About the Role
The Science & Data Science team connects advancements in science and research to quantify and improve agriculture at planetary scale. It includes ecosystem modelers, data scientists, and remote sensing experts. We define the science requirements behind high-quality carbon credits, scope 3 emissions estimates, and water benefit reporting to help farmers get paid for sustainable practices. We collaborate with scientists across academia and industry, and we work on world-class data sets and experiments to advance the science around sustainability and agriculture.
To quantify impact rigorously and cost effectively, we collect data on farming practices, remote sensing, in-field measurements, and other data sources to model and analyze water savings, greenhouse gas emissions, soil carbon sequestration, land use, and other sustainability attributes. We combine science, data, technology, and software engineering to fight climate change and support grower success when making sustainability-driven decisions. Reporting to a Principal Data Scientist, this role is primarily responsible for advancing the science and modeling for Scope 3 and Carbon programs, including soil biogeochemistry, trace gas emissions, and water, using a range of methods (from process modeling to statistical and neural-network methods).
What You'll Do
Modeling & Analysis:
- Quantify and interpret impacts of agricultural management practices on soil carbon, GHG emissions, and water outcomes.
- Develop, calibrate, and expand existing biogeochemical models to advance Indigo’s modeling capabilities (e.g., expansion of agronomic practices, geographies, sources of emissions).
- Serve as an expert in biogeochemical modeling, DayCent, ensemble modeling, and deep learning methods to quantify soil carbon and GHG outcomes.
- Collaborate with our field team and university research groups to design and implement experiments to enable new GHG and water model development.
- Integrate remote sensing, soil, weather, and management datasets to support robust modeling outcomes.
- Stay current with advances in ecosystem modeling, machine learning / AI, environmental data science, and agricultural water management.
- Collaborate with engineers on scaling quantification and building code that can be deployed into production systems.
Communication, Collaboration, and Commercial Partnership:
- Review and interpret quantification results for high-quality internal and external reporting.
- Align modeling outputs with commercial priorities and participate in key customer engagements.
- Collaborate cross-functionally (agronomy, engineering, commercial) to translate scientific insights into actionable outcomes.
What You’ll Bring
