CAPITAL PLANNING & FACILITIES (UA-VPAD-IUBLA)

The Office of Sustainability advances efficiency, resilience, and responsible resource management at Indiana University by driving collaboration, building capacity, assessing performance, and engaging the campus community to inform decision-making and build a more sustainable institution. Sustainability interns will play a direct role in strengthening and supporting campus sustainability initiatives through working closely with office staff, campus partners, and peers. Students will support both ongoing and new campus efforts in support of Indiana University's Climate Action Plan, Indiana University (IU) Capital Planning and Facilities Key Performance Indicators, and the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System frameworks.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Educates and brings awareness of sustainability to the IU community both in-person (tabling, campus events) and through targeted outreach opportunities in areas such as:

Organics waste diversion,

Football tailgate recycling engagement,

Move out donations collections and waste diversion,

Energy conservation campaigns,

Campus waste education and behavior change campaigns, and

Peer-to-peer sustainability education.

  • Staffs and coordinates programs such as:

Sustainability Lending Library, Fix-it Clinic, and Free Store and

Youth gardening programs, herb/flower cultivation, and community garden coordination.

  • Tracks program success metrics.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of campus sustainability initiatives, in partnership with campus stakeholders and a team of peers in areas such as:
  • Infrastructure audits (i.e., lighting, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, etc.), and energy conservation projects., Theatre set design waste reduction and diversion, and Procurement analysis for understanding and reducing impact associated with IU's value chain.
  • Monitors project progress and timelines.
  • Maintains relationships with partners.
  • Assists with peer and partner led sustainability programs.
  • Seeks additional funding or grant sources in support of campus / university-wide sustainability and position related initiatives.
  • Higher ed / sustainability focused professional development and training opportunities.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Currently enrolled as a undergraduate and graduate students
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater

Preferred

  • Knowledge of environmental and sustainability concepts preferred but not required
  • Familiarity with principles of sustainability and relevant campus programs
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel, Access, and Word
  • Strong writing and communication skills

The work is performed equally in a remote and office setting. At times, workload requires being outdoors or in high traffic indoor / outdoor campus spaces for events. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. This role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and communicate effectively. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the working environment; handle or operate objects, controls, or tool; position self to move at lower levels; and discern scents. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity; discern between colors; and discern items in detail. The position requires the ability to move up to 30 pounds. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires the ability to maintain student status for the duration of the internship.

This student employee will be expected to work at least 1 day in the office for mentor and bi-weekly full team meetings, and the remainder of their work will be done remotely, on or off campus.
