CAPITAL PLANNING & FACILITIES (UA-VPAD-IUBLA)

The Office of Sustainability advances efficiency, resilience, and responsible resource management at Indiana University (IU) by driving collaboration, building capacity, assessing performance, and engaging the campus community to inform decision-making and build a more sustainable institution. Communications interns with the IU Office of Sustainability will play a key role in telling the story of sustainability at Indiana University.The intern will work closely with office staff, campus partners, and peer interns to develop compelling content for digital and print platforms and amplify the impact of sustainability programs and events. The communications intern will contribute to the storytelling of sustainability at IU through social media, multimedia content creation, written storytelling, and targeted outreach.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Supports strategic communications that elevate campus initiatives, engage the IU community, and highlight progress toward the university's sustainability goals.
  • Helps expand the visibility of IU's Climate Action Plan, major programs, and sustainability achievements campus-wide.
  • Manages the IU Sustainability Instagram account, including content planning, posting, engagement, and analytics.
  • Creates graphics, visual materials, data visualization, and branded assets using Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools.
  • Produces photography and videography content for events, campaigns, and storytelling features.
  • Writes short- and long-form content including student spotlights, project profiles, news stories, and website copy.
  • Updates and maintains website content to ensure accuracy, clarity, and alignment with brand guidelines.
  • Develops targeted messaging and marketing materials for sustainability programs, workshops, and events.
  • Assists with event-day photography, videography, tabling, and audience engagement.
  • Creates promotional campaigns that increase event attendance and program reach.
  • Coordinates with program leads to align communication strategies with project goals.
  • Supports sustainability-focused programs and initiatives as needed.
  • Participates in professional development activities related to communications, design, or sustainability.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Currently enrolled as an IU undergraduate or graduate students;
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater

The work is performed equally in a remote and office setting. At times, workload requires being outdoors or in high traffic indoor / outdoor campus spaces for events. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. This role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and communicate effectively. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the working environment; handle or operate objects, controls, or tool; position self to move at lower levels; and discern scents. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity; discern between colors; and discern items in detail. The position requires the ability to move up to 30 pounds. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires the ability to maintain student status for the duration of the internship.

Expected to work at least 1 day in the office for mentor and bi-weekly full team meetings, and the remainder of their work will be done remotely, on or off campus.
