Application closing date: 17th May 2021

The Opportunity

We are currently looking for a numerical modeller with a focus on engineering to join the software development team working on our ground- breaking virtual networks tool, which is used to help decarbonise communities and review the feasibility of including distributed energy resources (DER’s). The iVN (intelligent virtual network) is a network modelling and management tool which allows clients to create a virtual model of any resource network; integrate electricity, heating, cooling and water networks and distribute energy across campuses and communities.

As a Numerical Modeller at IES, you will be involved in:

  • Research and define behaviour of new systems and topologies that don’t exist in the current version of the tool.
  • Refining current capabilities on sustainable urban energy systems planning and operation; e.g. network infrastructure for power flow, district heating / cooling, optimisation and demand response mechanisms.
  • Analysis of future flexibility coordination mechanisms in these urban energy systems
  • Correlate multiple energy flexibility resources, taking geographical and physical constraints into account
  • Produce software prototypes that can be tested before final implementation.
  • Liaise with developers during implementation
  • Work with internal consultants to troubleshoot new and existing features and identifying bug fixes.

The Candidate

We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:

Essential Skills:

  • Educated to degree level in any STEM subject. Physics, applied mathematics, engineering or computer science would be a distinct advantage.
  • Previous experience with mathematical modelling and/or the simulation of physical systems (e.g. mechanical, electrical or thermodynamic systems.
  • Experience using Python.
  • Basic competency in any programming language (e.g. C, C++, C#, Fortran, Java etc.)
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Desirable Skills:

  • Educated to Masters or PhD level in a relevant STEM subject.
  • Prior experience with practical application of data-driven modelling for distribution network operations
  • Commercial experience in a similar role would be a clear advantage (e.g. Internship, practical applications of theory).
  • Experience using MATLAB / Simulink or similar tools

The Rewards

In return we offer the chance to work for a dynamic company in an exciting and supportive working environment; we will reward you with a competitive salary; private health care; a contributory pension scheme; life insurance and flexible start times.
