Summer Sustainability Intern – Ecos Studio

Position Overview
Interior Architects (IA) is seeking a motivated Summer Sustainability Intern to support the Ecos Studio, IA’s interdisciplinary sustainability and ESG practice. The intern will work closely with the Senior Director of Sustainability to advance firmwide initiatives focused on reducing energy, water, waste, and carbon emissions across IA’s operations, in alignment with our Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments and broader ESG strategy.
This role offers hands-on experience at the intersection of corporate sustainability, ESG strategy, and the built environment, and is well-suited for students pursuing studies in sustainability, environmental science, engineering, architecture, or related fields.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Sustainability & Climate Action
- Support IA’s organizational initiatives to reduce energy, water, waste, and greenhouse gas emissions, including data collection, tracking, and analysis.
- Assist with research and documentation supporting SBTi-aligned decarbonization strategies, including Scope 1, 2, and select Scope 3 emissions reduction efforts.
- Help develop internal tools, dashboards, and summaries to support ESG reporting, goal tracking, and progress communications.
- Assist with sustainable and healthy materials research, including identification, evaluation, and labeling of preferred materials and products.
- Support materials transparency efforts related to environmental and human health impacts, such as embodied carbon, material chemistry, and circularity considerations.
- Help organize and maintain sustainability reference materials, guidelines, and internal resources used by IA project teams.
- Contribute to projects supporting IA’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) actions, including research, documentation, and internal engagement initiatives.
- Support internal education, sustainability communications, and cross-studio coordination related to IA’s ESG goals.
- Assist with special projects and related tasks as assigned to support Ecos Studio and firmwide sustainability priorities.
- Currently pursuing a degree in Sustainability, Environmental Studies, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Public Policy, or a related field.
- Strong interest in climate change, ESG, sustainable materials, and the built environment.
- Familiarity with or interest in sustainability frameworks and concepts such as SBTi, greenhouse gas accounting, life-cycle thinking, and materials transparency.
- Strong research, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word); experience with data analysis or sustainability tools is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
