Head of Sustainability
About us
Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT) is a fully owned subsidiary of Hapag-Lloyd. Headquartered in Rotterdam, HGT manages a portfolio of stakes in 26 marine terminals and complementary logistics businesses across 13 countries and five continents, with plans to expand to around 30 terminals by 2030.
Its portfolio includes port terminals and logistics services across Latin America and Florida, the container terminals, depots and rail activities of J M Baxi in India, as well as strategic European hubs in Germany, France and the Mediterranean. Together, these assets form an increasingly integrated global terminal and logistics network.
At HGT, we are an international team of experienced professionals who believe that successful partnerships are built on trust, commitment and execution. Our ambition is to provide terminal operations that are safe, sustainable, reliable and efficient, while consistently delivering high-quality service to our customers.
The Position
The Head of Sustainability will be responsible for developing and driving HGT’s global sustainability strategy and supporting its execution across Regions and operating assets.
Based in Rotterdam, the role will report directly to the HGT Board, with a dotted-line relationship to the Regional CEOs. While the mandate is global, there will initially be a strong focus on Europe, where regulatory developments, decarbonization requirements and operational transformation needs are currently most significant.
The role will lead HGT’s sustainability agenda across its global portfolio, including decarbonization, energy transition, ESG performance, regulatory compliance and the integration of sustainability into operational and investment decisions.
The position requires a strong combination of strategic thinking, industrial understanding, project management, analytical rigor and stakeholder management, with the ability to translate sustainability ambitions into measurable actions and business value.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and continuously evolve HGT’s global sustainability strategy and roadmap, under the guidance of the HGT Board and in close collaboration with Regions, operating companies and Hapag-Lloyd, including measurable targets and KPIs for decarbonization, energy efficiency, renewable energy and other relevant ESG priorities.
- Lead and coordinate the implementation of HGT’s decarbonization and energy-transition agenda, including Scope 1, 2 and relevant Scope 3 emissions, electrification of terminal operations, renewable energy, alternative fuels, energy efficiency and other scalable low-carbon solutions.
- Oversee sustainability execution across HGT’s portfolio, supporting Regions and assets in translating global objectives into practical asset-level action plans, monitoring progress and promoting best-practice sharing across the organization.
- Coordinate ESG data, performance monitoring and reporting, ensuring reliable and consistent information for HGT management, the HGT Board and Hapag-Lloyd Group reporting and disclosure requirements.
- Work closely with Finance, Strategy, Operations and Technical teams to embed sustainability into CAPEX planning, investment decisions and business cases, considering environmental impact alongside energy savings, operating costs, investment requirements and return on capital.
- Act as HGT’s regulatory radar for sustainability, monitoring relevant developments and supporting compliance with applicable frameworks and legislation, including CSRD, LkSG and other environmental, carbon and sustainability-related requirements.
- Manage key internal and external stakeholders, including senior management, operating companies, shareholders, customers, authorities, industry bodies and business partners, while promoting stronger ownership of sustainability across the organization.
Job Requirements
- 5+ years of relevant experience in sustainability, ESG, decarbonization or energy transition, preferably within heavy industry, maritime logistics, port operations, infrastructure or global supply chains.
- Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Sustainability Management, Engineering, Supply Chain/Logistics, Business Administration, or a comparable discipline.
- Strong practical knowledge of decarbonization, carbon accounting, greenhouse-gas emissions management and ESG reporting, including Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 methodologies.
- Good understanding of EU sustainability and environmental regulation and internationally recognized ESG and carbon-accounting frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to translate sustainability objectives into operational programs, measurable targets and investment initiatives.
- Strong analytical, project-management and business skills, with the ability to assess both the environmental and financial impact of sustainability initiatives.
- Strong stakeholder-management capabilities and the ability to influence senior executives, Boards, operational teams, authorities and geographically dispersed organizations.
- Clear and structured communication skills, with the ability to turn complex sustainability topics into concise, decision-ready recommendations.
- Professional fluency in English is required. Dutch or other European languages are an advantage.
- Willingness to travel internationally as required.
The Opportunity
This role offers the opportunity to directly shape the global sustainability agenda and transformation trajectory of a top-10 global terminal operator, working across a diverse international portfolio of port and logistics assets.
The successful candidate will have direct exposure to the HGT Board and senior management and will play a central role in ensuring that sustainability contributes not only to compliance and environmental performance, but also to operational efficiency, resilience, capital discipline and long-term value creation.
