Unit Summary
Corporate Services provides a variety of diverse services to clients in both the clinical and non-clinical areas of Hamilton Health Sciences as well as to external clients. Services provided include Portering, Linen, Clinical and Core Housekeeping, Corporate Services Scheduling office and Nutrition Services.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director, Corporate Services, the Environmental Sustainability Lead provides strategic and operational leadership for Hamilton Health Sciences' environmental sustainability program. This role holds accountability for the organization's environmental performance, which includes strategy development through to execution, monitoring, and reporting, across all sites and operational areas.
The Environmental Sustainability Lead develops and stewards the organization's environmental sustainability roadmap, ensuring alignment with corporate priorities, applicable legislation, and healthcare sustainability best practices. As the organization's senior subject matter expert on environmental stewardship, the role advises and influences senior leadership and cross-functional partners in areas including climate change mitigation and adaptation, sustainable clinical practices, planetary health, procurement, and environmental risk management.
Working collaboratively with clinical and corporate programs, facilities and capital planning, procurement, environmental services, and community partners, the Environmental Sustainability Lead fosters a culture of environmental stewardship across the organization, integrating sustainable practices into operations and decision-making at all levels. The role serves as Hamilton Health Sciences' primary external representative on environmental sustainability, building and maintaining relationships with peer institutions, sector networks, regulatory bodies, and community partners, and representing the organization on relevant committees, working groups, and professional associations. Through these external connections, the role ensures the organization remains current with emerging trends, best practices, and evolving expectations in healthcare sustainability.
The role leads organizational environmental reporting and performance measurement, including sustainability reports, external benchmarking submissions, and key performance indicator tracking to drive continuous improvement. This extends to operational oversight of environmental programs such as waste management, encompassing regulatory compliance, vendor and contract management, and the development of policies, procedures, and staff education initiatives.
This position directly supervises environmental and waste program staff, providing direction, mentorship, and support for program delivery, project planning, and stakeholder engagement. Through strategic leadership, effective program management, and a commitment to embedding stewardship principles into the culture and operations of Hamilton Health Sciences, the Environmental Sustainability Lead plays a central role in strengthening organizational accountability and advancing environmental sustainability across the organization.

Qualifications
- Post-Secondary Degree within field of Environmental Management or related field
- Advanced knowledge of Federal, Provincial and Municipal environmental legislation and regulatory requirements
- Advanced knowledge of environmental stewardship and management principles encompassing all aspects of healthcare and its impact within community at large
- Advanced understanding of impact of climate change and local/global initiatives and opportunities to engage in corrective actions within healthcare
- Demonstrated ability to manage short- and long-term projects
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to lead people and initiatives
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
- Excellent computer skills including tools such as excel/ppt/visio/tableau etc
Proficiency in both Official Languages would be an asset.
