Principal Civil/Structural Engineer – Building Design (P.E. or S.E. Required) – Role Description
This is a full-time remote role for a Principal Civil/Structural Engineer – Building Design (P.E. or S.E. Required). The position is ideal for highly experienced civil and structural engineers with expertise in nuclear facilities, seismic design, structural optimization, and infrastructure development who are passionate about advancing next-generation clean energy technologies.
The Principal Civil/Structural Engineer will serve as the technical lead for the design, optimization, and qualification of Hadron Energy's reactor building and supporting civil infrastructure. This individual will be responsible for developing building layouts, foundation systems, and structural configurations that support safe, cost-effective, and scalable deployment of Hadron's micro modular reactor technology.
You will work closely with structural analysts, reactor designers, licensing engineers, geotechnical consultants, and manufacturing teams to establish the structural basis of the reactor building while driving cost reduction, constructibility improvements, and regulatory compliance. This role will partner directly with the Principal Structural Analysis Engineer responsible for building structural analysis and seismic qualification activities.
Responsibilities
- Lead the overall civil and structural design of the reactor building, foundation systems, equipment support structures, and associated site infrastructure
- Develop and optimize reactor building layouts to improve constructibility, modularization, transportation, and deployment efficiency
- Establish design criteria for civil and structural systems in accordance with applicable nuclear and commercial codes and standards
- Collaborate with structural analysis engineers to evaluate building performance under seismic, thermal, operational, and accident loading conditions
- Coordinate development of foundation concepts and structural support systems based on geotechnical conditions and deployment requirements
- Lead design optimization studies focused on reducing construction costs, minimizing material quantities, and improving deployment schedules
- Work closely with reactor systems, mechanical, and balance-of-plant engineers to ensure building configurations support plant operation, maintenance, and safety requirements
- Support development of NRC licensing documentation and safety analyses related to civil and structural systems
- Coordinate with external engineering firms, architects, contractors, and consultants supporting facility development
- Review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and design packages for quality and code compliance
- Support site selection, constructibility reviews, and future deployment planning activities
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to civil and structural engineering staff
Qualifications & Skillsets
- Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Structural Engineer (S.E.) license required
- 10+ years of experience in civil and structural design for industrial, energy, infrastructure, or nuclear facilities
- Strong experience with reinforced concrete, structural steel, foundations, and heavy equipment support structures
- Familiarity with seismic design methodologies and nuclear facility structural requirements
- Proficiency with engineering design and analysis software such as AutoCAD, Revit, STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, ETABS, or equivalent tools
- Strong understanding of ACI, AISC, ASCE 7, IBC, and related design standards
- Experience working with geotechnical engineers on foundation and site development projects
- Knowledge of NRC regulatory requirements and nuclear facility design practices is highly desirable
- Excellent analytical, communication, and technical writing skills
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering efforts and coordinate external consultants
