We're embarking on a new project to build the technology that powers the next chapter — a platform that turns individual home solar-battery systems into a coordinated, intelligent energy network to minimise bills and reduce peak demand at critical grid nodes. It's novel work, it's funded, and it matters.

The role

You'll be the primary engineer responsible for designing and building the core platform — and you'll be doing it from scratch.


The intellectual centre of the role is developing multi-objective optimisation and control algorithms that enable clusters of residential solar and battery systems to operate as coordinated, grid-aware networks — rather than independent household assets. Then comes the real test: moving from algorithm to production. Integrating with hardware platforms via manufacturer APIs, commissioning the system across live occupied homes, and validating that it works safely and reliably at scale.


This is a full-stack technical leadership role. You'll work closely with our Lead Data Scientist (whose forecasts feed your optimisation engine) and with Gryd's Project Lead and CPO on architecture and delivery. You'll also have access to an experienced external Energy Systems and Regulatory Advisor for specialist input on grid interaction, electricity markets, and energy system design.

The technology you build will become a core part of Gryd's commercial platform. Your technical decisions will have a lasting impact.


What you'll be doing

Optimisation and control

  • Defining system objectives and constraints for coordinated multi-home solar-battery operation
  • Designing and building multi-objective optimisation algorithms — household cost, battery health, portfolio value, peak demand management
  • Building control logic that operates within dispatch intervals, respects safety constraints, and fails safely under degraded conditions
  • Handling uncertainty and forecast imperfection in design, not as an afterthought
  • Running simulation-based validation before live deployment
  • Making the optimisation logic explainable and fair across households on a fixed subscription

Integration, deployment, and validation

  • Integrating optimisation logic with inverter and battery management systems via cloud platform APIs
  • Leading commissioning across clusters of live, occupied homes
  • Conducting functional and safety validation before full deployment sign-off
  • Managing iterative improvement post-deployment
  • Supporting the data team on performance evaluation


What we're looking for

You'll need:

  • Strong Python engineering skills with experience building production-grade systems
  • Experience in optimisation, control systems, or energy management software
  • Familiarity with distributed energy resources — solar PV, battery storage, or demand-side flexibility
  • The ability to design systems that work reliably under real-world conditions with incomplete or delayed data
  • Experience with API integration and third-party hardware or cloud platforms
  • Comfortable leading a technical workstream end-to-end — from research and design through to live deployment
  • Strong documentation and code quality practices

Helpful but not essential:

  • Experience with constraint-based or multi-objective optimisation (linear programming, MPC, reinforcement learning)
  • Familiarity with residential battery or inverter platforms and their cloud APIs
  • Understanding of UK electricity markets, grid flexibility, or DNO constraints
  • Startup or fast-moving product environment experience
  • Exposure to SCADA, BEMS, or similar control and monitoring systems
  • Innovate UK or other grant-funded R&D experience

Contract details

The contract runs from August/September 2026 to approximately January 2028. We're growing fast and the intention for this to convert to a permanent role. 1 month notice period. PAYE terms. Applicant must be located in the UK.
