The Senior Communications Specialist leads strategic communications leadership and execution in support of the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP), a U.S. Department of Energy initiative that helps federal agencies achieve energy efficiency and resilience goals. FEMP provides technical expertise, tools, training, and project support to advance efficient energy adoption, reduce costs, and enhance mission readiness across the federal government. The Senior Communications Specialist ensures that FEMP’s mission, initiatives, and successes are communicated clearly and effectively to diverse stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Planning and Leadership: Develop and implement communications strategies, messaging frameworks, and engagement plans that align with DOE and FEMP priorities.
- Content Development: Translate complex technical, policy, and programmatic information into clear, compelling communications tailored for diverse audiences.
- Awareness and Outreach: Design and deliver multi-channel campaigns, newsletters, fact sheets, and digital media to expand awareness of FEMP programs, best practices, and success stories.
- Visual and Digital Communications: Lead the creation of graphics, infographics, presentations, and multimedia products that simplify and amplify technical content.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Coordinate events, briefings, workshops, and engagements to strengthen collaboration across federal agencies and industry partners.
- Accessibility and Compliance: Ensure all communication products meet Section 508 accessibility requirements and adhere to DOE branding and identity standards.
- Mentorship and Guidance: Provide direction and quality oversight to junior communications staff, ensuring consistency and excellence in deliverables.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- 6-8 years of experience in strategic communications, preferably in federal energy and/or other related programs
- Demonstrated success developing and executing communications strategies for high-visibility federal programs.
- Demonstrated ability to engage diverse audiences and translate technical information into accessible messaging.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and communications design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, etc.).
- Strong organizational skills with experience managing multiple projects and leading cross-functional teams.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and presentation skills with attention to clarity, tone, and impact.
- Prior experience supporting federal programs and familiarity with DOE, FEMP, or energy-related initiatives strongly preferred.
