Earth Sciences NZ was established on 1 July 2025 through the merger of GNS and NIWA, with the upcoming acquisition of MetService further strengthening its capabilities. About The Position

This fixed term 12 month parental leave position will be part of Earth Sciences New Zealand’s cutting-edge laboratory and science teams helping to address important and urgent scientific questions of societal relevance to the benefit of New Zealand in areas such as climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and geohazards.

Key Responsibilities Include

The purpose of this position is to support the FileMaker Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) databases used in our laboratories for management of samples, analytical processes, reporting, invoicing and other data flows to enable efficient work that meets our quality and regulatory requirements. You will work with users to keep the labs functioning efficiently including organising input data and automating run processes using scripts for generation and analysis of data on laboratory instrumentation and checking outputs.

What We’re After

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • at least 3 years programming and database software, operations, and administration experience preferably from a Science environment/laboratory
  • practical experience with laboratory systems
  • experience developing scientific applications of programming software to support instrument operations and data flow automation
  • be able to rapidly manipulate between Excel and more advanced software
  • the ability to efficiently write scripts in FileMaker (preferred), Python, R or similar environments.

  • The salary range for this position is between $89,295 to $116,928 or more, depending on the successful candidate’s experience.
