Job Description

GIS is a premier energy services company delivering comprehensive solutions across the evolving energy landscape. While rooted in over 75 years of excellence in offshore and onshore construction and maintenance within the oil and gas industry, GIS has expanded its capabilities to include large-scale utility solar farm construction projects. Our continued commitment to safety, innovation, and operational excellence allows us to support both traditional and renewable energy sectors with the same trusted expertise. We are welcoming a Talent Acquisition Partner to support our recruitment efforts and contribute to the continued growth and success of the company as we prioritize financial integrity and excellence in a dynamic industry.

General Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Estimator to support the bidding, planning, and execution phases of substation and power delivery construction projects across multiple industries, including utility-scale renewable energy (solar, wind, storage), oil & gas infrastructure, and other electrical projects. The Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and detailed cost estimates for electrical and civil scopes associated with medium- and high-voltage substations, transmission, and distribution systems, ensuring alignment with engineering drawings, specifications, and EPC contract requirements. This role requires deep knowledge of electrical systems, procurement practices, and labor cost forecasting specific to large-scale industrial and energy-sector projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Estimate Preparation
    • Develop detailed cost estimates for substation and power delivery scopes, including equipment (transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, relays, bus duct, SCADA, protection and controls), labor, and subcontractor work.
    • Review drawings, specifications, RFQs, and project documents to identify scope requirements, risks, and opportunities.
    • Perform take-offs for conduit, cable, terminations, grounding, control wiring, and other substation- or transmission-related materials.
  • Cost Analysis & Forecasting
    • Prepare itemized estimates covering direct labor, materials, equipment rentals, subcontractors, and indirect project costs.
    • Develop unit pricing and labor productivity benchmarks specific to renewable energy, oil & gas, and industrial substation construction.
    • Evaluate vendor and subcontractor proposals to ensure accuracy, scope coverage, and competitiveness.
  • Collaboration & Support
    • Work closely with project managers, engineers, procurement, and construction teams to validate estimates and align with project execution strategies.
    • Provide input during project hand-off meetings to ensure a smooth transition from estimating to construction.
    • Support change order preparation and pricing during project execution.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Maintain a database of historical cost data, vendor pricing, and lessons learned for future projects.
    • Identify value-engineering opportunities to improve cost efficiency without compromising safety or quality.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related field preferred; equivalent professional experience considered.
  • 5+ years of estimating experience in electrical construction, preferably with high-voltage substations, transmission/distribution systems, and/or large-scale power projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with take-offs, labor productivity analysis, and electrical estimating software.

Knowledge, Ability, or Skills Required

  • Strong understanding of medium- and high-voltage substation design and construction (≥34.5 kV) and transmission/distribution systems.
  • Familiarity with NEC, IEEE, NESC, NFPA, and utility interconnection standards.
  • Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., Accubid, HeavyBid, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, civil layouts, and equipment specifications.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Strong vendor/subcontractor negotiation and relationship management skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Primarily office-based role; requires extended periods of computer use.
  • Occasional site visits to substation, power delivery, or industrial projects for field verification or vendor meetings.
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain, climb stairs, and wear required PPE during site visits.
