The Role:


The Sustainability Team is responsible for advancing the company’s sustainability objectives and fostering continuous improvement throughout our operations, in alignment with the broader business strategy.

The Sustainability Engineer, reporting to the Sustainability Environmental Manager, will play a key role in realising this sustainability ambition across the organisation. The Sustainability Engineer will be responsible for advancing the environmental activities of our sustainability commitments. The Sustainability Engineer will also support GNI’s Environmental and Energy Management Systems. The Sustainability Engineer will be responsible for the identification, development and implementation of initiatives required to drive continuous improvement on all sustainability KPIs and to ensure compliance with all environmental and energy obligations.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Be a key player in driving real change and supporting the business in delivering the core sustainability KPIs as part of the sustainability commitments
  • Liaise with key stakeholders to develop their sustainability objectives
  • Monitor and report GNI Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and participate in CDP.
  • Support the work of the Sustainability Environmental Manager in managing the GNI Environmental (ISO14001) and Energy (ISO50001) Management Systems in alignment with legislative requirements and industry best practice.
  • Development and delivery of current sustainability initiatives with regards to Climate Change, Green Sustainable Procurement, Biodiversity Enhancement, Energy management, Circular economy and resource use, Community Impact.
  • Conduct audits, inspections and performance monitoring of sustainability compliance across the business to identify continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Provide sustainability support and sustainability advice to Project Managers during development, planning, design, construction and commissioning phases.
  • Assist the Environmental Manager and Sustainability team in driving compliance with policy through sustainability, environmental and energy awareness programmes and staff engagement activities.
  • Champion Sustainability best practice throughout the organisation.
  • Consider opportunities for innovative sustainability practices.
  • Represent GNI on National or International forums as required.
  • Oversee and monitor sustainability performance of business partners working on GNI’s behalf.
  • Provide guidance and management support across all GNI Business units e.g. procurement support, environmental assessment and planning support etc.
  • Other duties as required.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience:


  • Environmental Degree (or other relevant third level qualification).
  • Formal Environmental/Sustainability qualification to master’s level an advantage.
  • Formal auditing qualification an advantage.
  • Working knowledge of sustainability, environmental and energy management systems desirable
  • Climate change adaptation, environmental planning requirements, circular economy and resource use, Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), GHG emissions management, governance and reporting e.g. CSRD, CDP
  • Proven ability to create and develop good working relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals, coupled with the ability to gain commitment from others.
  • Ability to foster a sustainability culture within the organisation
  • Experience with identifying improvement opportunities, generating ideas and implementing solutions.
  • Experience in project management
  • Excellent communication, presentation, writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Proactively identifying new areas of learning and using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job.
  • Ability to set own high standards of performance and delivering desired results.
