Annual Compensation: $190,000 – $280,000

A highly regarded national law firm is seeking an Energy, Environment & Natural Resources Associate Attorney to join its growing Chicago office.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an attorney looking to build a sophisticated energy regulatory and renewable energy practice while working alongside experienced practitioners in a collaborative and entrepreneurial environment. The ideal candidate will have experience handling state regulatory proceedings and a strong interest in the evolving energy sector.

About the Practice

The Energy, Environment & Natural Resources Practice Group advises clients on complex regulatory, compliance, and transactional matters across the energy industry. The team works with utilities, energy suppliers, renewable energy developers, and other industry stakeholders on high-impact matters shaping the future of energy.

This opportunity is ideal for attorneys seeking to develop their skills in:

⚡ Energy regulatory proceedings

⚡ Renewable energy development and compliance

⚡ Utility rate cases and regulatory investigations

⚡ Rulemaking and administrative proceedings

⚡ Strategic client counseling and industry-focused legal solutions

Key Responsibilities

✅ Represent clients in state regulatory proceedings and administrative matters

✅ Assist with traditional and non-traditional rate cases, investigations, and rulemakings

✅ Advise clients on retail energy approvals and regulatory compliance matters

✅ Conduct legal research and analysis on complex energy and environmental issues

✅ Draft legal memoranda, regulatory filings, briefs, and related documents

✅ Collaborate closely with attorneys across the practice group

✅ Provide practical, business-focused legal guidance to clients

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school

• 3–5 years of relevant experience in energy regulatory, utility, environmental, or related practice areas

• Experience with state regulatory proceedings, rate cases, investigations, rulemakings, and/or retail energy matters

• Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills

• Strong academic credentials

• Commitment to teamwork, collaboration, and client service

• Excellent communication and organizational skills

Preferred Experience

⭐ Familiarity with solar incentive programs

⭐ Experience with power purchase agreements (PPAs)

⭐ Community solar contracting experience

⭐ Retail energy supply contracts and related regulatory matters
