Mechanical Engineer – HVAC / MEP Consulting

We’re seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer to join an established engineering team in Indianapolis. This is an opportunity to take ownership of mechanical design projects, collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary teams, and deliver high-quality building systems across the full project lifecycle.

We’re looking for an engineer who combines strong technical expertise with sound judgment, communication skills, and the ability to lead design coordination and deliverables.

What You’ll Do

Mechanical Design & Engineering

  • Lead mechanical engineering design from initial planning and system selection through construction completion.
  • Evaluate project requirements and recommend HVAC and mechanical systems based on performance, energy efficiency, cost, and long-term operating considerations.
  • Develop and oversee HVAC system layouts, design calculations, equipment selections, control sequences, construction documents, and technical specifications.
  • Design and coordinate ductwork, hydronic and steam piping, air distribution, and mechanical equipment.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable mechanical codes, building codes, and relevant ASHRAE standards.
  • Perform cost estimating and life-cycle cost analyses to support informed engineering decisions.

Project Leadership & Coordination

  • Serve as a primary mechanical engineering contact for clients, contractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Lead design coordination with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, and other disciplines.
  • Direct and review work produced by mechanical designers and CAD/BIM technicians.
  • Coordinate with utility providers, equipment manufacturers, and other project partners.
  • Lead or participate in internal design reviews and client meetings while keeping deliverables on schedule.
  • Review construction documents and specifications for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and code compliance.

Construction Administration & Quality Control

  • Oversee mechanical submittal and shop drawing reviews.
  • Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) and resolve design questions during construction.
  • Coordinate field issues and provide engineering guidance to contractors and project teams.
  • Maintain project design documentation and quality assurance records.
  • Take responsibility for technical quality and the successful delivery of mechanical engineering work.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited four-year institution.
  • Professional experience in HVAC design, mechanical building systems, or MEP consulting.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC system selection, equipment sizing, duct design, hydronic piping, and mechanical system controls.
  • Ability to interpret architectural, structural, electrical, and mechanical drawings and coordinate systems in three-dimensional building environments.
  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, and HVAC design or analysis software , such as Trane TRACE.
  • Familiarity with COMcheck, energy code compliance, mechanical specifications, and construction documentation.
  • Knowledge of applicable mechanical codes and ASHRAE standards.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and project coordination skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, maintain project schedules, and provide technical guidance to designers and project team members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, with a commitment to continued professional development.
  • Experience leading mechanical design assignments and coordinating multidisciplinary projects.
  • Experience with commercial, institutional, healthcare, educational, or other complex building projects.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE, ASPE, ASME, or other relevant engineering organizations.
  • Experience with construction administration, cost estimating, and life-cycle cost analysis.
