Project Manager – Utility-Scale Energy Storage & Substation Projects
An established energy infrastructure company focused on the development, construction, and operation of utility-scale energy storage assets in wholesale electricity markets is seeking an experienced Project Manager.
Founded in the late 2010s, the organization is a national leader in grid-scale battery energy storage deployment, leveraging proprietary dispatch optimization tools to support both merchant and contracted revenue structures. The company maintains a significant portfolio of operating and in-construction utility-scale storage assets across the United States, along with a multi-gigawatt development pipeline.
Position Overview
The Project Manager will oversee utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and substation projects. This role functions as the overall project leader with full accountability for safety, schedule, budget, contract compliance, and construction quality.
This is an office-based role located in one of several major U.S. offices, with a hybrid in-office requirement (minimum three days per week). Relocation assistance may be available for highly qualified candidates. While not site-based, the role requires travel to project sites as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution
- Manage overall project design in coordination with internal and external engineering resources
- Develop and manage the project execution plan, including kickoff and closeout meetings
- Oversee EPC contractor scheduling and support schedule recovery planning when required
- Coordinate and manage design RFIs
- Ensure daily safety planning documentation is prepared and followed
- Proactively engage landowners and stakeholders to ensure expectations are met
Safety Leadership
- Demonstrate visible safety leadership and reinforce safe work practices
- Ensure Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) are conducted prior to work activities
- Verify adherence to site-specific standard operating procedures
- Support technical, quality, and safety compliance across the project team
- Ensure appropriate training is completed before personnel begin work
EPC & Stakeholder Management
- Provide strong oversight of EPC contractor performance
- Maintain and strengthen EPC relationships
- Ensure delivery aligns with contractual and organizational expectations
Budget & Cost Control
- Own project budget, forecasting, procurement oversight, and cost-to-complete projections
- Monitor financial performance and material management
Contract Management
- Ensure EPC compliance with contractual obligations
- Review and negotiate change orders
- Manage field purchases and material/equipment procurement
- Maintain documentation of contractual obligations and variances
- Ensure flow-down of contract terms to subcontractors
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
- Strong knowledge of project management processes, including budgeting, scheduling, and contract negotiations
- Experience with scheduling software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6)
- PMP certification preferred
- Construction safety knowledge (OSHA 30 certification preferred)
- 5+ years of construction experience, including field exposure
- 2+ years of supervisory or leadership experience in construction
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to obtain a valid passport for occasional international travel
