System Engineer - Energy Storage
Position Overview
Frontier Power USA is looking for a System Engineer to support the design, integration, and delivery of utility-scale battery energy storage projects. This role will coordinate the technical interfaces between battery DC blocks, PCS equipment, medium-voltage systems, plant controls, protection, SCADA, and balance-of-plant equipment supplied by multiple OEMs. The ideal candidate understands power systems, works well across engineering disciplines and vendors, and can support a project from early design through commissioning.
What You Will Do
· Develop and maintain system architecture, single-line diagrams, equipment interfaces, design criteria, and technical requirements for utility-scale BESS projects.
· Coordinate integration of third-party battery DC blocks, PCS equipment, transformers, switchgear, protection, metering, auxiliaries, EMS, and SCADA.
· Review OEM drawings, specifications, data sheets, compliance documents, communication interfaces, and operating requirements.
· Prepare and manage equipment specifications, interface documents, point lists, design calculations, technical submittals, and engineering action lists.
· Support equipment selection and technical evaluations to confirm compatibility, performance, safety, and project requirements.
· Work with OEMs, EPC partners, utilities, customers, and internal teams to resolve technical questions and interface gaps.
· Support design reviews, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, commissioning, and performance testing.
· Troubleshoot system-level issues involving electrical equipment, communications, controls, protection, and vendor packages.
· Track technical risks, design changes, open items, and lessons learned across projects.
· Multiple locations: North Carolina and Vermont
· Travel to supplier and project sites as needed.
What We Are Looking For
· Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, power systems engineering, or a related field.
· Three or more years of experience in power generation, substations, renewable energy, energy storage, or related industrial power systems.
· Working knowledge of electrical power systems, including medium-voltage equipment, transformers, switchgear, protection, metering, controls, and communications.
· Ability to read and review single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment drawings, control narratives, and technical specifications.
· Experience coordinating technical interfaces with equipment manufacturers, EPCs, consultants, utilities, or customers.
· Strong problem-solving, organization, documentation, and technical communication skills.
· Ability to manage multiple technical workstreams and travel to project or vendor sites.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience with utility-scale BESS, solar, microgrids, or power conversion equipment.
· Familiarity with battery management systems, PCS/inverters, EMS, SCADA, Modbus, DNP3, or IEC 61850.
· Experience supporting FAT, commissioning, energization, or performance testing.
· Professional Engineer license or Engineer-in-Training certification.
