The Energy Engineer will lead Comprehensive Building Assessments for commercial, institutional, municipal, and industrial facilities throughout Massachusetts and New England. This position is responsible for evaluating existing building systems, identifying energy-efficiency and decarbonization opportunities, assessing electrification feasibility, and developing actionable recommendations consistent with Mass Save technical-assistance requirements.

The successful candidate will combine hands-on building-systems knowledge with strong energy analysis, cost estimating, carbon accounting, technical writing, and project-management skills. The role requires the ability to translate complex facility conditions into practical, phased capital-improvement strategies that address energy use, greenhouse-gas emissions, operating costs, electrical capacity, resiliency, and applicable building-performance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive building assessments and evaluate building systems, equipment, controls, and operating conditions.
  • Analyze energy use, utility data, costs, demand, and carbon emissions to identify performance and savings opportunities.
  • Develop energy-efficiency, electrification, decarbonization, and renewable-energy recommendations.
  • Evaluate project feasibility, electrical capacity, implementation costs, incentives, savings, and payback.
  • Develop phased implementation plans aligned with facility needs, capital priorities, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports and present findings and recommendations to clients and stakeholders.
  • Manage assessment scope, schedules, budgets, deliverables, subcontractors, and technical resources.
  • Perform quality-control reviews of technical analyses, calculations, cost estimates, and reports.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Industrial, Environmental, Architectural, or a related discipline. Must be ABET accredited or equivalent)
  • 3-5 years’ work experience in HVAC, renewable energy, utility, facility management, or consulting field.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, building energy efficiency, grid-responsive technologies, decarbonization technologies, and renewable energy.
  • Demonstrated field experience evaluating commercial or institutional HVAC systems, controls, domestic hot-water systems, electrical infrastructure, building envelopes, and other major energy-consuming systems.
  • Strong project management skills and proficiency with industry-standard tools/platforms. Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts.
  • Proactive, result-driven mindset and willingness to grow beyond current expertise.
  • Strong organizational skills to support travel and coordination of field activities.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Ability to travel to facilities throughout Massachusetts and New England and comply with all site and company safety requirements.

Preferred Skills

  • Direct experience completing Mass Save Comprehensive Building Assessments, Scoping Studies, Focused Studies, or custom technical-assistance studies.
  • Experience with Massachusetts municipal, K–12, higher-education, healthcare, multifamily, laboratory, or other complex commercial facilities.
  • Familiarity with Massachusetts building-performance requirements and local ordinances such as BERDO and BEUDO.
  • Familiarity with Mass Save incentives, custom savings methodologies, and technical-assistance reporting requirements.
  • Experience evaluating electrical-service capacity, heat-pump retrofits, geothermal systems, on-site solar, energy storage, or resiliency measures.
  • Professional Engineer, Engineer-in-Training, Certified Energy Manager, Building Energy Assessment Professional, or similar credential.
