Role Description
We're looking for a skilled and motivated Senior Thermal Equipment Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate has significant hands-on experience in machine design and a strong background in thermal analysis. You'll be responsible for the full lifecycle of our stand-alone thermal equipment, from initial concept and design through to fabrication and testing. This role is perfect for a self-starter who enjoys both the theoretical aspects of thermal engineering and the practical challenges of building robust machinery.
This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and be part of the growth of a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission!
This opportunity is based out of Form Energy's Weirton, WV facility. Relocation assistance is available.
What you'll do:
Design and develop new stand-alone thermal equipment, including proof of concepts and full-scale production machines.
Create 3D models and detailed engineering drawings of machine components and assemblies using CAD software.
Perform basic thermal analysis to ensure equipment meets performance and efficiency requirements. This includes calculating heat loads, heat transfer rates, and temperature profiles.
Select and size critical components, including motors, drives, sensors, heaters, and heat exchangers (e.g., shell and tube, plate, or finned-tube).
Design and analyze welded steel machine frames and structures to ensure structural integrity and stability.
Specify and select appropriate materials for various components, considering thermal, mechanical, and environmental factors.
Work closely with fabrication and assembly teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and to resolve any issues during the build process.
Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including bills of materials (BOMs), assembly instructions, and operational manuals.
Conduct hands-on testing and validation of prototypes to verify performance and design compliance.
What you'll bring:
Proven experience 4-7 years in machine design, particularly with stand-alone equipment.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, or a related field.
Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar).
Demonstrable experience with machine design - particularly in the areas of stand alone process equipment, mechanical facilities used for complex HVACD management, etc.
Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical components, including the ability to select motors, drives, and sensors for specific applications.
Experience with the selection and sizing of heat exchangers and other thermal components.
Familiarity with performing basic thermal calculations and analysis.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
