Role Description

The Integrated Structures Mechanical Engineering team at Form is responsible for designing the structure, enclosure, and sealing systems that support and integrate all parts of our innovative utility-scale multi-day energy storage system. We strive to deliver designs optimized for performance, quality, reliability, and cost for high-volume manufacturing at Form Factory.

We are seeking a Senior Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team and lead design efforts. You’ll bring components and assemblies from concept into mass production, with a strong emphasis on structural design, weatherproofing, and manufacturability of metal enclosures. You’ll tackle mechanical design challenges and apply your knowledge of sheet metal, weldments, plastics, and sealing systems for mass production. You’ll work cross-functionally with teams on requirements definition, verification plans, and failure analysis to deliver a design that meets those requirements. Troubleshooting design problems and implementing improvements will also be part of your responsibilities. This is an exciting opportunity to scale our multi-day energy storage system at Form and contribute to a sustainable future. If this sounds like the perfect opportunity, apply now.

What you'll do
  • Create white-page designs that will be the foundation of Form Energy’s Gen 2 product designs
  • Perform hands-on prototyping of designs and collaborate with broader teams to build integrated prototypes
  • Work with consulting companies, vendors, manufacturing engineers, and technical operations to transition designs from the prototype stage to high-volume production
  • Perform bench testing, hand calculations, and FE A to inform specs and future design direction
  • Release designs consistent with company and team best practices (drawings, tolerance analysis, etc.)
  • Drive verification testing of your design work
  • Perform failure root cause analysis on systems and assemblies
  • Travel up to 20% to other Form Energy offices or vendor sites
  • Mentor junior engineers, with opportunity to directly manage and lead a team of 2-3 engineers
  • Lead standardization of best practices within the structures team
What you'll bring
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 12+ years of industry experience in mechanical design
  • Experience leading design work for complex mechanical systems and structural design, using FEA for structural analysis
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD), specifically SolidWorks modeling and drafting using GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
  • Proficient in component design for mass manufacturing and assembly (DFMA), especially sheet metal, stampings, weldments and extruded components
  • Proficient with prototyping techniques and working in a machine shop environment
  • Sense of urgency and self-driven to hit difficult schedule targets
  • Familiarity with mechanical verification testing
  • Experience directly managing and coaching teams is a plus
  • Familiarity with electro-mechanical systems, power electronics, or batteries is a plus
