Job Description:
Location: On-Site Houston, TX
Role Overview
This role supports Fluence product supply and development by partnering hardware engineering lead on lithium-ion battery subsystem hardware, performance characterization, and verification testing. A working understanding of battery cell and module degradation is expected; however, the primary focus is battery electrical systems engineering and mass production of battery modules and testing (HV architecture, protection, BMS interfaces/communications, instrumentation, and validation) across internal teams, suppliers, and third-party labs.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of Li-ion batteries and subsystem components (cells, modules, BMS), including key electrical ratings/limits and interface requirements for energy storage products
- Support as lead engineer Fluence Energy battery module manufacturing in the US, including production readiness and technical issue resolution
- Drive product and process improvements at the production facility using data-driven methods (yield, cycle time, FPY) and controlled change management
- Partner with production teams and equipment suppliers to identify root causes of EOL test failures and production issues (containment, corrective actions, verification)
- Contribute to battery module/pack design architecture and flow requirements into manufacturable, scalable mass-production solutions; collaborate cross-functionally to deliver to schedule
- Establish battery module production readiness: define equipment/station requirements, develop procedures, and set in-process and end-of-line test checkpoints
- Collaborate with systems engineering to ensure battery technical characteristics (limits, fault behavior, comms) are reflected in overall energy storage system design
- Manage and coordinate with battery module suppliers and subcomponent vendors on requirements, changes, and technical deliverables
- Serve as the main contact for third-party lab testing of new battery equipment (e.g., protection tests, BMS communication testing, thermal validation, integration with Fluence controls, telemetry points, mechanical fit/installation)
- Gather supplier data on thermal behavior of battery modules in operation and partner with enclosure design teams to size cooling solutions for key applications
- Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent
- 5+ years of experience developing and testing high-voltage battery systems (integration, verification, and validation)
- Experience in manufacturing/industrialization of battery cells or modules (process readiness, EOL test, quality controls)
- Broad technical knowledge across engineering disciplines (electrical, electronics, mechanical, thermal, materials, safety, test/validation, manufacturing)
- Global mindset with experience working in an international, multi-cultural matrix environment (cross-site teams and suppliers)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills (English required; Chinese is a plus), including clear technical documentation
- Self-starter who is results-oriented and process-driven, with disciplined change/configuration control
- Strong problem-solving skills, including structured root-cause analysis and data interpretation
- Willingness to travel frequently primarily within the US
- Energy storage industry experience preferred but not required
