Founding Modeling Lead - BESS & Energy Systems
Germany / Berlin · Full-time
FIDgate is building a decision platform that helps renewable energy teams design and finance better projects — faster and with more confidence.
We combine engineering, energy-system modeling and financial analysis to help developers and IPPs make better decisions before Final Investment Decision.
We already have a working optimization engine supporting utility-scale renewable projects. Now we're looking for a Founding Modeling Lead — BESS & Energy Systems to help build its next generation.
You will own the development, validation and productionization of FIDgate's energy-system modeling capabilities, with a particular focus on battery storage, dispatch optimization and electricity markets.
This is not a pure research role.
You will translate mathematical and scientific models into robust, tested, production-grade Python software used to support real infrastructure investment decisions.
You'll work directly with the founder, modeling team and software engineers to build the production-grade Core v2 system that our platform and SDK depend on.
- BESS dispatch and techno-economic models
- Battery sizing, duration and operating-strategy optimization
- Day-ahead, intraday and ancillary-services modeling
- Energy arbitrage and revenue stacking
- PV + BESS and hybrid renewable optimization
- Grid constraints, curtailment and co-location
- Battery efficiency, cycling, degradation and lifetime assumptions
- MILP formulations and solver orchestration
- Multi-scenario and sensitivity analysis
- Model verification, validation and regression testing
- Optimization-engine architecture and Core v2
- Production-grade scientific computing infrastructure
- Performance and computational benchmarking
- Modeling interfaces exposed through our Python SDK/API
- Strong Python engineering skills — you write maintainable, tested production code, not only notebooks or research scripts
- Hands-on experience with mathematical optimization, particularly LP/MILP
- Experience with BESS dispatch, energy-system optimization or electricity-market models
- Strong scientific/numerical computing background
- Experience with tools such as Pyomo, Gurobi, OR-Tools or equivalent
- Ability to translate research or mathematical models into production software
- Understanding of model verification, validation and numerical correctness
- Ability to communicate modeling assumptions, limitations and trade-offs clearly
Experience with one or more of:
- Day-ahead and intraday electricity markets
- FCR / aFRR / mFRR and ancillary services
- BESS revenue stacking
- Battery degradation and cycling models
- PV+BESS / co-located hybrid projects
- Techno-economic optimization
- Real battery operational datasets
- Gurobi performance optimization
- Energy economics and investment metrics such as NPV, IRR, LCOE and LCOS
- Utility-scale renewable project development
A PhD or research background is welcome but not required. Production engineering ability is required.
You enjoy working where energy systems, mathematical optimization and software engineering meet.
You care about scientific rigor, but you also know that a production model needs to be maintainable, explainable and fast enough to support real decisions.
You can distinguish between a model improvement that materially changes an investment decision and additional complexity that doesn't.
You want ownership rather than a narrowly defined research task.
And you're excited by the idea of turning sophisticated energy models into software used by renewable-energy developers and investors.
You'll join at a stage where the foundations already exist, but many of the important modeling decisions are still ahead of us.
You'll have substantial influence over:
- Core v2 architecture
- BESS modeling methodology
- Optimization strategy
- Model validation standards
- Scientific engineering practices
- How new market and storage capabilities enter the product
We are supported by the German EXIST program and work closely with the German renewable-energy and research ecosystem.
- Full-time
- Germany-based preferred
- Berlin, Aachen, Cologne/Düsseldorf and other German energy/research hubs welcome
- Regular collaboration with the Berlin team
- Start as soon as possible
For candidates joining through our EXIST-funded setup, specific eligibility conditions may apply depending on the arrangement.
- Introductory conversation
- BESS / energy-systems and optimization deep dive
- Practical modeling + production-engineering discussion
- Collaboration exercise using a representative FIDgate modeling problem
- Final mutual-fit conversation
If you've worked on BESS optimization, electricity markets, dispatch or energy-system models and want to see those models become production software used for real renewable infrastructure decisions, we'd like to hear from you.
