POSITION DESCRIPTION:


The Program Director is a senior level position which leads and coordinates Families for a Livable Climate’s (FLC) core programs, community engagement, and movement-building efforts across Montana. This role is responsible for translating FLC’s strategic priorities into impactful, community-based programming - supporting volunteers, building partnerships, and facilitating opportunities for people to engage in meaningful climate action.


This is a highly relational and dynamic position that blends program leadership, community engagement, event facilitation, and strategic coordination. The Program Director works closely with the Executive Director, practicum student(s), volunteers, and community partners to grow FLC’s reach and deepen its impact.


This position also incorporates key outreach and communications functions, including event promotion, partner coordination, and supporting storytelling and engagement efforts across programs.


POSITION DETAILS:


  • Schedule: 32 hours per week
  • Compensation: Starting at $28/hour

  • Location: Hybrid, based in Montana


This position requires regular travel within Montana, as well as evening and occasional weekend work to support community events and programming.


GEOGRAPHIC FOCUS:


FLC works across multiple communities in Montana. While responsibilities may shift based on organizational priorities, the anticipated allocation of time is approximately:


  • Missoula area: ~30%
  • Bozeman area: ~20–25%
  • Flathead region: ~20%
  • Bitterroot region: ~20%
  • Other communities / statewide efforts: ~10–15%


This includes time spent planning, coordinating, and supporting programming - not only time physically spent in each location.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


The Program Director’s responsibilities fall into three broad categories, with time allocated approximately as follows:

Program Leadership, Strategy & Implementation (~50%)

Lead the design, coordination, and evaluation of Families for a Livable Climate’s core programs, translating organizational vision and strategic priorities into concrete plans, activities, and measurable outcomes.


Responsibilities include:

  • Lead implementation of FLC’s strategic plan and core program priorities in collaboration with the Executive Director, Board, staff, volunteers, and key partners.
  • Participate in big-picture planning, brainstorming, and organizational direction-setting, contributing ideas, analysis, and on-the-ground insights to help guide FLC’s growth and impact.
  • Co-develop annual goals, work plans, timelines, and evaluation metrics with the Executive Director.
  • Develop and maintain systems to track program impact, volunteer engagement, partnership effectiveness, and progress toward strategic goals.
  • Lead planning and facilitation of FLC’s core educational and engagement programs, including:
  • Climate leadership development, skills trainings, and workshops (advocacy and organizing, campaign planning, how to give public comment, etc)
  • Climate Conversations & Montana Climate Stories
  • Action-oriented gatherings such as Action Parties and Potlucks
  • Pilot initiatives such as our Montana Youth Climate Mentorship Network, peer support circles, and other emerging programs
  • Coordinate logistics, outreach, follow-up, and evaluation for programs and events.
  • Travel to communities across Montana to support programming and partnership development.


Community Engagement & Movement Building (~30%)

Build and strengthen the relationships, volunteer leadership, and partnerships that power FLC’s work across Montana.


Responsibilities include:

  • Support and grow FLC’s Working Groups and Core Team.
  • Recruit, onboard, and support volunteers, with an emphasis on leadership development and meaningful engagement.
  • Work with volunteers and partners to advance campaigns and community-based climate action efforts.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, coalition partners, and stakeholders across the state.
  • Support coalition development and collaborative initiatives, including efforts such as Climate Advocacy Day.
  • Conduct outreach and listening to identify community priorities, opportunities for collaboration, and emerging needs.
  • Help explore and cultivate new engagement spaces, such as faith-based organizing and youth-focused initiatives.
  • Support outreach and promotion of programs and events through email, social media, partner communications, and storytelling efforts.


Nonprofit Administration, Development & Team Support (~20%)

Contribute to the organizational systems, fundraising, and team coordination needed to sustain and grow FLC’s impact.


Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise and support practicum students, interns, and volunteers.
  • Delegate and coordinate tasks related to outreach, event planning, and volunteer engagement.
  • Foster a collaborative, supportive, and responsive team culture.
  • Assist with grant writing, reporting, and other program-related fundraising activities as needed.
  • Support program budgeting, expense tracking, and administrative systems.
  • Participate in staff meetings, planning processes, and other organizational activities that strengthen FLC’s effectiveness and sustainability.


WORKING CONDITIONS:


  • Hybrid work environment (remote + in-person)
  • Regular travel across Montana (approximately every other month, sometimes more depending on programming)
  • Evening work (approximately 2 events/month on average)
  • Occasional weekend events
  • Ability to lift and transport materials for events


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • 3–5 years of experience in nonprofit program management, community organizing, climate advocacy, education, or related fields (or equivalent combination of experience and education)
  • Strong leadership and initiative, with the ability to take ownership of projects and drive work forward in a dynamic, evolving environment
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and at a big-picture level, while also managing details and follow-through
  • Proven ability to translate vision, ideas, and strategic priorities into tangible programs, actions, and measurable outcomes
  • Experience coordinating and leading programs, events, or community-based initiatives from concept through implementation
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and partners
  • Ability to balance planning and execution, moving fluidly between brainstorming, decision-making, and hands-on implementation
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt as needed
  • Comfort working both independently and collaboratively, including coordinating with staff, board members, and external partners
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness/ability to travel regularly across Montana


DESIRED SKILLS & QUALITIES:


  • Experience in community organizing, advocacy, or grassroots movement-building
  • Comfort facilitating conversations on complex or emotionally charged topics
  • Experience developing or leading trainings or educational programming
  • Familiarity with climate issues and/or climate justice frameworks
  • Experience with communications tools (email platforms, social media, basic content creation)
  • Experience with grant writing or nonprofit development
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and working across diverse communities
