As our new Product Compliance Manager, you will join the Market Readiness Team within Fairphone's wider Product Team. You will play a key role in ensuring that all Fairphone hardware and software solutions meet the diverse regulatory and sustainability requirements of our target markets.
In this position, you will act as the internal strategic expert who translates the regulatory assessments issued by the Legal & Compliance team into specific product requirements, working in close alignment with the Legal & Compliance team to validate regulatory interpretations and mitigate corporate risk. You will own the implementation of the product compliance framework, technical and user documentation, and our long-term regulatory roadmap to ensure seamless market entry, and overall product lifecycle risk management.
While you work on this, you will work hand-in-hand with our Certification Manager in the hardware engineering team, who handles the relationship with external testing labs and certification bodies. Together, you will safeguard the launch and compliance lifecycle of our modular electronics.

- Translate regulatory standards and product label (ie., TCO, Blue Angel) criteria into specific actionable product requirements for all existing and future product categories, and work with Product Managers to include compliance into the Product Requirements Documents (PRD) from day one.
- Continuously monitor changes in high-level global legislation (e.g., the EU Battery Regulation) to inform our long-term technology and product roadmap in collaboration with our Legal & Compliance team, acting as the domain lead for turning those assessments into requirements and roadmap input.
- Own our product technical files.
- Contribute and review initial versions of user guides, Health & Safety Guides (HSG), and packaging compliance texts to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements, managing internal stakeholders across Brand, Product, and Marketing.
- Define the compliance and certification requirements to be included in contracts, and clarify specific certification actions to the Certification Manager.
- Act as the internal point of contact for product compliance questions, ensuring the day-to-day operational execution and manage our general legal obligations and regulatory requests together with the legal team in alignment with our compliance framework.
- Maintaining compliance of products in the market and ensuring Legal’s assessments remain applied across the portfolio, when legislation, product design, or market scope changes. Conduct risk analyses and compliance assessments in collaboration with the Legal & Compliance team.
- Define and maintain the compliance requirements for smartphones, audio devices, and accessories across all target markets (such as CE and FCC).
- Identify potential compliance risks and bottlenecks early in the product lifecycle and own the compliance deliverables in the NPI framework, including the acceptance criteria.
- Lead the creation and lifecycle management of all Technical Files, Declarations of Conformity (DoC), and (user) compliance texts.
- Support the integration of sustainability principles into new standards, legislation, and product labels (e.g., TCO, Blue Angel) by monitoring regulatory trajectories and engaging with relevant industry forums.
- You have a minimum of 10 years of experience in product compliance within the consumer electronics industry or closely related field.
- You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Law, or a related technical field.
- You possess deep expertise in global regulatory frameworks including EU/CE (MSD, LVD, RED, EMC); US (UL, FCC, GCF, Prop 65), and related directives, regulations and international and are adept in managing Technical Construction Files.
- You are highly strategic, analytical, and comfortable translating high-level legislation into concrete engineering requirements.
- You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; familiarity with Mandarin and French are a plus.
- Practical knowledge of circular electronics, environmental directives, and sustainability certifications (such as Blue Angel, EPEAT, Eco-rating, or TCO).
