Primary Purpose

These roles will support long-term strategic planning, capacity expansion, electrification, clean energy, and climate adaptation, and will plan and oversee large, complex capacity expansion projects such as substation expansions and new substations. Senior Engineers are expected to lead and innovate in these areas, while General Engineers are expected to provide foundational technical support and grow into more advanced responsibilities.

Engineers on the Substation and Strategic Planning team provide technical guidance and leads efforts to ensure the reliability, resilience, and efficiency of ComEd’s electric distribution system. This role develops and applies advanced planning methodologies, load forecasting, and system modeling to anticipate future grid needs driven by electrification, distributed energy resources (DER), climate impacts, and policy mandates such as the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA). Also, this role collaborates across engineering, operations, and regulatory teams to identify and justify infrastructure investments, optimize system performance, and support decarbonization.

This role provides technical expertise and strategic guidance to inform capital planning, grid modernization initiatives, and customer programs. In addition to technical responsibilities, a senior engineer plays a key role in training and mentoring junior engineers, fostering their professional development through knowledge sharing, coaching, and hands on guidance in planning practices and tools. This position may require the candidate to work extended hours for coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.

Primary Duties

  • Serves as an expert for a designated planning area, including knowledge of substation design, and issues long range plans. – 20%
  • Performs capacity planning studies of the ComEd distribution system using CYME power flow analysis software. Prepares load forecasts and analyzes modification and modernization impacts to the distribution grid. – 20%
  • Designs electrical drawings in AutoCAD and prepares scope and cost estimates for general load growth, Electrification, Data Center, and substation projects. – 10%
  • Evaluates, develops, and leads projects that have significant financial and operational impact. Plans, writes, and performs tasks for project deliverables. – 10%
  • Recommends strategies to improve system performance and cost-effectiveness to align with company goals. – 10%
  • Provides mentorship, peer review, and technical training to distribution planning staff and engineers. – 10%
  • Engages with technical and industry organizations to remain informed on emerging technology and relevant challenges in the utility sector. Makes recommendations for business decisions regarding new technologies, engineering techniques, and tools. – 10%
  • Participates in or leads cross-departmental meetings/conference calls to ensure alignment within the company (may include providing direct oversight of contractors). – 5%
  • Supports regulatory filings (e.g. CPCN, Reconciliation, Grid Plan, etc.). (General Engineer) – 5%
  • Supports regulatory filings (e.g. CPCN, Reconciliation, Grid Plan, etc.) and may serve as an expert witness or provide expert opinions on planning-related information. (Senior Engineer) – 5%

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Licensed Professional Engineer (2) (3) Knowledge of engineering designs, principles and practices
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply problem solving approaches and engineering theory.
  • Detailed knowledge of applicable standards, codes methods, and practices unique to areas of expertise.
  • 7+ years of professional engineering experience (1) (3) (See Note 3. Thorough knowledge and experience in unique areas of engineering expertise.
  • Ability to apply advanced engineering principles to identify and resolve complex issues.
  • Minimum of three related career experiences (4) (i.e., changes in technical job responsibilities, which may or may not include a change in department) OR
  • Lead Member of a recognized industry committee OR
  • Professional Engineer's License (2), advanced technical degree, MBA or Project Management Certification (1) Master's degree in Engineering reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year. (2) License must be issued by the state in which you are practicing. (3) PE License reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year. (4) Career related experiences is defined as changes in technical job responsibilities and does not have to include a change in department.
  • Note: Items (1) and (3) are mutually inclusive, whereby the maximum experience requirement reduction is one (1) year (e.g., in the case of an employee with both a master's degree in Engineering AND a PE license, the minimum experience requirement would be reduced by one (1) year).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree (1) or Graduate level work in Engineering, Business Administration or Project Management Certification.
  • Possess Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certification and/or Professional Engineer license.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of management, with strong interpersonal and team-building skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • A working knowledge of analysis software packages such as CYMDIST, PSS\E, Python, PLS-CAD, Pole Foreman, Power BI, or similar.
  • Relevant experience in utility distribution or new business design, with substation experience
  • Relevant background in utility planning.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on applying engineering concepts to complex challenges.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting, with a willingness to contribute to group discussions and take direction from senior engineers. (General Engineer)
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. (Senior Engineer)
  • Participation in industry committees, working groups, or authorship of technical publications. (Senior Engineer)

  • Annual salary will vary based on a candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience, and other factors: $103,200.00/Yr. – $141,900.00/Yr.
