The Role

We're looking for an HSE Specialist to join our team in Amsterdam. To be successful in this role you should be passionate about the development of solutions and implementation of strategies to address identified key risk areas, communicating changes and process improvements by actively participating in formal and informal communication to increase and enhance the understanding and awareness of HSE issues.

Get to know the team

As an HSE Specialist based in the Amsterdam office, you will be part of the QHSE Management team that is responsible for the awareness of Health, Safety and Environment support, advice, training, and reporting functions of the site.

What you'll be doing

You will maintain positive and proactive relations with key stakeholders and employees of the business, assisting with the ongoing day-to-day provision of Health, Safety and Environment support. You will assist in the development of solutions and implementation of strategies to address identified key risk areas, communicating changes and process improvements by actively participating in formal and informal communication, to increase and enhance the understanding and awareness of HSE issues. As HSE Specialist you will take the lead on local audits, continually reviewing work practices and making recommendations of ways in which processes and systems can be improved.

You will work from our office in Amsterdam at least 2 days a week or as needed, as well as from home, and report to the HSE manager.

Your main responsibilities will include, but aren't limited to:

HSE Compliance

  • Ensure all company policies surrounding HSE are met.
  • Host and lead audits (internal, clients and authorities).
  • Prepare health and safety plans and support the continuous developing of internal policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for day-to-day coordination and maintenance of the Health, Safety and Environmental systems.
  • Ensure that all assessments, as required by legislation, are conducted and reviewed at relevant intervals and maintain records of this.
  • Liaise closely with other operational teams to ensure continuous improvement of all systems and processes to improve safety at the workplace.
  • Keep up to date with new legislation and maintaining a working knowledge of all Health and Safety legislation and any developments that affect our industry.
  • Carry out other duties as and when business requirements dictate as may be reasonably expected by line manager.

HSE Awareness

  • Ensure all company policies surrounding HSE are met.
  • Promote incident prevention for the benefit of employees and visitors.
  • Assist in the development and presentation of relevant HSE training.
  • Assist with the developing of suitable, practical and workable processes to reduce HSE risks to as low as we practically can.
  • Assist with creating meaningful HSE campaigns and initiatives that deliver positive change and awareness.
  • Advise on a range of specialist areas, e.g. electrical safety, emergency preparedness, fire regulations, hazardous substances, safeguarding machinery, occupational diseases and environmental compliance.
  • Coordinate industrial hygiene and occupational health requirements.

Reporting & Controlling

  • Report to management on the performance of the HSE systems and any need for improvement and be fully accountable for achieving all relevant KPIs and metrics.
  • Record incidents and accidents, producing statistics for managers.
  • Support our operational teams with risk assessing our activities and putting suitable controls in place.
  • Monitor and analyze technical and legal standards.
  • Investigate incidents to get to the real root cause and identify improvements to prevent a recurrence.

What we'd really like more of:

Technical Skills/ Hard Skills

  • A completed HBO degree, preferably Safety & Security Management (Integrale Veiligheidskunde).
  • MVK, VCA and / or Auditor / lead auditor certification is an advantage.
  • Verbal and written communication skills in Dutch and English.
  • Working knowledge of HSE Integrated Management Systems in ISO14001 & ISO 45001.
  • Working knowledge of a manufacturing or engineering environment including risk assessment awareness.
  • Incident investigation practical experience.
  • Computer literacy (including good command of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook).
