Process Engineer (m/f/d) - Green Hydrogen & Power-to-X
About Eternal Power
Eternal Power is building a platform for green fuels and molecules. We want to scale the production of hydrogen and its derivatives and drive costs down the same way solar, wind and battery storage did before, so that hard-to-abate industries can actually decarbonise. Our first production is planned for 2027. That means many of the engineering decisions that will shape our plants are being made right now.
The role
As Process Engineer, you’ll take our projects from the first feasibility studies through conceptual engineering and Pre-FEED. You’ll work closely with our Lead Process Engineer, who has spent many years both running and designing process plants.
Above all, we’re looking for someone who knows how process plants are designed and how they behave once they’re running. You don’t need to be a hydrogen expert on day one. Solid engineering fundamentals, a practical approach and real interest in the technology matter more to us. You’ll pick up the hydrogen side quickly here.
What you’ll do
Process design
- Develop process concepts for hydrogen and Power-to-X plants and turn them into BFDs, PFDs and preliminary P&IDs
- Prepare mass and energy balances, utility requirements and preliminary equipment sizing
- Work out how the main equipment fits together: electrolysers, compressors, storage, gas treatment, heat exchangers and balance of plant
- Look closely at operating conditions, turndown and efficiency, and find where a design can be improved
Feasibility and economics
- Carry out the technical work in pre-feasibility, feasibility and Pre-FEED studies
- Compare process configurations and technologies, and feed into CAPEX/OPEX estimates and hydrogen cost calculations
- Model operating scenarios with fluctuating renewable power and flexible electrolyser operation
- Spot technical risks early, before they become expensive
Suppliers and contractors
- Write technical specifications and prepare RFIs and RFQs
- Review OEM and EPC proposals, datasheets and performance guarantees, and compare them on performance, reliability, maintainability and lifecycle cost
- Act as the technical counterpart for suppliers and engineering contractors, and help define the interfaces between plant packages
Safety and permitting
- Take part in HAZID and HAZOP studies and work on explosion protection (ATEX)
- Assess hazards related to hydrogen, pressurised systems and other hazardous substances
- Check designs against the relevant regulations (e.g. BImSchG, Störfall-Verordnung, BetrSichV, Pressure Equipment Directive) and provide technical input for permitting on topics such as cooling, noise and water
Working across the project
- Work with project development, commercial and electrical engineering to make projects technically and economically viable
- Integrate hydrogen production with power supply, utilities, CO₂ sources and downstream synthesis
- Prepare reports, calculations and presentations for internal decisions and external partners
- As projects move forward, get involved on site in assessments, commissioning and operational readiness
What you bring
- A degree in chemical or process engineering, industrial chemistry, mechanical engineering with a process focus, or something similar
- At least 3 years of experience in process or plant engineering, ideally in oil & gas, (petro)chemicals, industrial gases, energy or a comparable industry
- A firm grasp of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer and pressure systems
- Hands-on experience with engineering calculations, equipment sizing and process documentation
- Confidence with Excel and other calculation tools
- Fluent German for technical discussions, and good English
- You like working independently but know when to pull others in
Nice to have
- Time on an operating site as a process or production engineer, ideally alongside engineering projects: troubleshooting, optimisation, commissioning or start-up
- Involvement in conceptual design, FEED or detailed engineering
- Experience with HAZOP, HAZID, ATEX or LOPA
- Experience working with OEMs and EPC contractors, or in tender evaluation
- Aspen Plus, HYSYS, UniSim or a similar simulation tool
- Exposure to electrolysis (PEM, alkaline, SOEC), hydrogen compression and storage, carbon capture, or e-fuels such as ammonia, methanol or e-SAF
Nobody ticks every box on this list. If you recognise yourself in most of it, we’d like to hear from you.
What we offer
- Real responsibility on projects that range from small industrial plants to large-scale production facilities
- Direct mentoring from an experienced Lead Process Engineer
- A broad view across process engineering, project development, supplier management and techno-economics
- More autonomy as you grow into the role
Interested?
- Just hit apply and send us your CV, ideally with a few lines on why the role appeals to you and your earliest start date. If you have any questions beforehand, feel free to message Vincent Weber directly.
