EDF’s Natural Climate Solutions
Initiative is a new global initiative and matrixed team whose goals rise to the level of the enormity of the climate crisis. Through taking a systems change approach that harnesses EDF’s unique capabilities in science, economics, policy, corporate partnerships and market design, we seek to bring forward catalytic solutions that, by 2030, will result in critical global-scale contributions to halting destruction and degradation of forest, peatlands, coastal and other natural systems, while rapidly growing natural carbon accumulation through sustainable management and restoration. The scope of this work is global in nature, with near-term priorities on tropical forests and emerging priorities on temperate and blue carbon systems, amongst others.

Overall Function

EDF is seeking a Communications Manager to develop and implement communications plans and media outreach strategies that further the goals of the Natural Climate Solutions initiative. Reporting directly to the program’s Senior Communications Director, the Communications Manager must be familiar with carbon markets and natural resource issues, especially those related to tropical forests, and have exceptional writing, editing and content creation skills across a variety of formats including press releases, op-eds, blogs, social media, metrics reports and other formats. The Communications Manager will write, edit and produce a range of communications materials while securing positive media coverage of the program’s work in top-tier, regional and trade outlets .

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute regional, national and global communications plans that identify key messages, target audiences, strategies and multimedia tactics to advance NCS’s goals, working closely with program staff and supervisor.
  • Coordinate among cross-functional departments within EDF to ensure message consistency and to capitalize on overlapping opportunities between NCS campaigns and other work areas.
  • Identify, plan and execute virtual and in-person events (conferences, forums, meetings, etc.) that position program staff as thought leaders.
  • Closely track media moments and the larger conversation around them to make thought leadership recommendations that can increase EDF’s influence and authority on these topics.
  • Develop and maintain positive, effective work relationships with key journalists, bloggers, editorial writers and columnists.
  • Secure favorable media coverage of the initiative’s work in top-tier, regional and trade outlets.
  • Prepare program staff for media opportunities as needed.
  • Create, edit and proofread written, digital and video materials under intense deadline pressure.
  • Help manage a variety of digital media assets, including blogs, web content, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts. Daily duties will include working with authors to draft stories, editing posts and developing original content.
  • Track campaign metrics and prepare summaries on a regular basis.
  • Manage consultants and interns as needed.
  • Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least six years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with at least four years’ experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to convey complex issues in understandable, accessible ways.
  • Bilingual candidates preferred (professional-level oral and written communication) with English and at least one of Spanish, Portuguese or French.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and excellent organizational skills, including ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to integrate and coordinate communications efforts across multiple organizations.
  • Knowledge of English-speaking media; established contacts with reporters and editors.
  • Knowledge of/contacts with Spanish or Portuguese-speaking media a plus.
  • Demonstrated research and writing, editing, and proofing skills.
  • Experience with video content creation and editing a plus.
  • Self-starter capable of working independently and collaborating successfully across diverse teams and time zones.
  • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Computer proficiency with MS Office and social media platforms such as Wordpress, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
  • Experience with earned media/social media management tools such as Cision, Hootsuite and Google Analytics.
  • Understanding of natural resource issues and carbon markets, especially those related to tropical forests.
  • Interest in EDF’s environmental mission and vision.
  • Some travel, up to 10% and including international, may be required for this position.
