Responsibilities :
Overall Function

Under the direction of the Vice President for Justice & Equity, the Director will lead the Justice & Equity (J&E) team’s efforts to stand up the Frontline Resource Institute (FRI), a strategic intermediary organization supporting frontline environmental and climate justice community leaders. The Director will manage the FRI team, housed within the Justice and Equity Department, to oversee FRI’s organizational direction, grantmaking strategy, outreach plan, and other key elements of a growing organization.

Responsibilities
The Director will help shape and implement FRI’s organizational strategy, direction, and overall growth as an entity.

Primary activities include:
  • Oversee and guide FRI’s organizational and programmatic direction, including day-to-day management of staff and consultants.
  • Build, refine, and adapt FRI’s Organizational Strategic and Operating Plan, developed by the FRI Conceptual Committee throughout 2023, and serve as primary FRI strategic advisor to the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Justice and Equity.
  • Serve as main liaison between FRI staff and Conceptual Committee, including planning and facilitating monthly Conceptual Committee meetings and subcommittee meetings, relaying staff updates and progress reports, and facilitating voting and approval processes.
  • Serve as main strategic liaison between Tides Foundation staff and FRI Team; identify grantmaking and development strategies to guide FRI’s Collective Action Fund.
  • Develop, manage, and engage in outreach strategy with major stakeholders – both internal and external - including other intermediary organizations, green groups, community-based organizations, and EDF staff.
  • Represent FRI and EDF at various conferences and other public speaking engagements and provide expert level information.
  • Support SVP of Justice and Equity on fundraising strategies for FRI, as needed.
  • Oversee annual budget development for FRI.
  • Manage and participate in the career development of FRI staff.
  • Participates in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

Qualifications
The successful applicant will have the following minimum qualifications:
  • An advanced degree in a relevant field with ten years professional experience in non-profit management in an operational environment, with a preferred focus on environmental and/or climate justice, public health, or other related fields (the degree requirement may be adjusted for a candidate who can successfully demonstrate commensurate professional experience along with excellence in their past roles).
  • Experience working successfully as an authentic partner with communities bearing the brunt of environmental and climate injustice. Special attention will be given to applicants who are themselves from a frontline environmental and climate justice community.
  • Strong organizational development skills, including planning, delegating, task and meeting facilitation, financial management, and relationship management.
  • Keen strategic capacity, and ability to develop and refine as needed an optimized strategy under high-pressure conditions.
  • Demonstrated history managing dynamic, fast-growing organizations. Experience establishing, managing, and growing 501c3 organizations preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence. Willing to work primarily in a collaborative team structure but capable of operating independently when needed.
  • Keen strategic capacity, and ability to develop and refine as needed an optimized strategy under high-pressure conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects with numerous team members in a fast-paced working environment, and a high capacity for working collaboratively across multiple programs.
  • Clear, concise and engaging verbal and written communicator.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
