Responsibilities :

Overall Function

Reporting to the AVP of Development Information & Strategy, the Director of Development Database Services supervises a team responsible for ensuring that EDF’s Development staff, managers and leadership receive strategic, contextualized reporting and information, and have the database tools and analysis they need to be successful. They are also responsible for designing the information delivery strategy and overseeing the creation of reports, metrics, and analytics that are shared with EDF’s Executive Team and Board of Trustees to support the strategic priorities of the organization.

The Director must have a deep understanding of fundraising practices and be able to anticipate client needs. They will also be responsible for developing tools and processes to support fundraisers’ collaboration with program leaders to manage EDF’s relationships with donors.

This is a remote role with preference for either Austin, TX, Boston, MA, Raleigh, NC, San Francisco, CA or Washington, DC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops a strategy for Development analytics to encourage and support data-driven decision making, predictive assumptions, and context-based presentation of information
    • Leads the Data Team’s efforts to map out all technical requirements for database enhancements and for new reporting and analysis
    • Outlines insights that will support the business processes in EDF Development, and enable action and decision-making
    • Demonstrates a deep understanding of the data in a way that informs valuable data insights uncovered when developing reports and outputs
  • Supervises and mentors a team including the Manager of Database Services, a Project Manager, and Development Data Coordinators and Specialists.
  • Elevates, formalizes, and upholds the Data Team’s commitment of service to the Development Department, including the following:
    • Ensuring data integrity
    • Providing scalable ways to collect and address database questions, feedback, and enhancement requests
    • Developing the database solutions needed to support EDF’s growing and changing needs, including new fields and business processes, reports, metrics, and analysis
      • Anticipating client needs based on a deep understanding of fundraising practices and the Salesforce functions that are needed to support those practices
      • Engaging with fundraisers, fundraising managers, and program leaders to determine the best ways to meet their and their teams’ needs
      • Involving stakeholders beyond the initial consultation process to ensure that all solutions being developed effectively address needs and concerns
    • Developing training collateral and training staff on database fields, functionality, and business processes
    • Communicating with the Department and individual clients on a regular basis about projects, including enhancements and new business processes
  • Serves as the Development Department’s lead liaison to the IT Services Team
    • Ensuring that IT understands, prioritizes, and executes on projects to meet Development’s growing and changing needs
    • Enabling IT to execute on projects quickly and efficiently with comprehensive specifications and requirements from Development, gathered by the Data Team
    • Ensuring that Development is apprised of, and deeply involved in, all database-related enhancements, whether directly or indirectly related to Salesforce (including but not limited to the adoption of integrated software solutions and Enterprise Resource Planning)
  • Leads the testing strategy and oversight of all new database functionality and troubleshooting to identify issues of concern before (and, as needed, after) new fields, systems and processes are launched
    • Establishes a QA methodology that persists beyond implementation and is scalable to include all projects and systems that impact Salesforce
  • Leads a community of practice across the organization, collaborating with the Development Data Team, the Membership Data Team and the Strategic Relationship Management Team to ensure that data teams across the Organization are sharing best practices and challenges and working together to develop mutually beneficial solutions
  • Serves as a member of EDF’s Data Governance Committee, ensuring donor privacy and representing the needs and best interests of the Development Department
  • Provides ongoing training and identifies professional development opportunities for the Data Team, helping to ensure that the Data Team continues to develop and is able to address the changing needs of a fast-growing Development Department

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 10 years of experience in the fundraising field
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor a team and work collaboratively with partners and stakeholders
  • Expertise in CRM databases, Business Intelligence and Data Visualization Software, and Excel (Salesforce certification or equivalent experience, and comfort with Tableau preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience with data visualization and analytical interpretation intended for an executive leadership audience
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical staff
  • Self-awareness, demonstrated cultural competency and inclusivity, and the ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment to identify and solve problems
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and manage multiple high-priority projects to completion on tight deadlines
