Overall Function

The Associate Vice President (AVP), Global Climate Cooperation will provide overall vision, strategy and leadership for the Global Climate Cooperation team, with a focus on multilateral fora and climate adaptation finance issues. The AVP will identify strategic opportunities, develop and lead the implementation of bold and equitable global climate solutions, and ensure consistent execution. The AVP will coordinate closely with EDF’s carbon markets team, as well as across EDF’s strategic initiatives to ensure cohesive international advocacy and communications at climate COPs and other international fora. The AVP will work independently and support the Vice President of Global Climate Cooperation to provide leadership of the overall Global Climate Cooperation team.

Key Responsibilities
  • With the Vice President for Global Climate Cooperation, provide leadership and oversight of the Global Climate Cooperation team, specifically coordinating EDF’s engagement in multilateral fora across EDF’s mission impact, solutions and regions.
  • Drawing on results from EDF’s strategic planning process for multilateral climate engagement, define clear and cohesive program vision, goals and priorities, design short- and long-term workplans and drive implementation aligned with EDF’s mission and vision.
  • Strategically position EDF as a leader in climate adaptation and climate finance by building internal capacity and knowledge for effective engagement, and growing EDF’s presence and expertise in multilateral fora, such as UNFCCC, ICAO, IMO, G20 and G7.
  • Provide strategic direction and develop recommendations to enhance EDF’s engagement with partners and stakeholders to effectively address equity and justice issues in multilateral climate cooperation.
  • Actively engage between and across EDF’s strategic initiatives and the executive team to create stronger and more effective internal collaboration, while drawing from EDF’s broad expertise in economics, science, business partnerships and policy to create holistic and durable solutions.
  • Engages in program and EDF-wide fundraising, coordinating with Development staff on trustee and donor stewardship, and participating in donor events.
  • Drive and manage communication with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., media, elected officials, and delegations) to elevate EDF’s global profile and build individual visibility as a “subject matter expert” on global climate policy.
  • Manage, mentor and grow a high-performing team providing them with professional development and motivate performance and promote retention.
  • Supports and builds a culture that fosters communication, collaboration, diversity, inclusion, professional growth, and trust.
  • Advance EDF Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values. v.
  • Identify and capitalize on opportunities and adequately monitor and manage risks to maintain progress.
  • Identify and implement partnerships with influential academics, institutions, the environmental community and other stakeholders to identify other areas of collaboration and drive progress toward achieving key programmatic goals.

Qualifications
  • Advanced degree with at least 12 years of relevant work experience with demonstrated success and impact.
  • Strong understanding of climate adaptation and climate finance issues at global and national level and familiarity with key stakeholders and networks.
  • A collaborative leadership style, with proven ability to empower and inspire staff, support learning, motivate performance, and promote staff retention.
  • Experience managing large teams, preferably in a regional or global organization/institution.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a strategic vision.
  • Demonstrated ability to fundraise and cultivate donor relationships.
  • Strong entrepreneurial capabilities and ability to foster innovation.
  • Excellent communication skills, experience with public speaking and working with the media.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining effective relationships with relevant stakeholders, including media, elected officials, and academic institutions.
  • A strong understanding of public policy with a proven track record of building alliances and working with country delegations.
  • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Successful experience in leading and delivering equitable outcomes.
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Position will require approximately 20% travel.
