Responsibilities :
Coastal Resilience Analyst (Climate Resilient Coasts and Watersheds, Louisiana)

The vision of the EDF's People and Nature Program is that the world meets human needs for food, water, and coastal protection in ways that improve ecosystems, rather than harming them. When it comes to natural resources in this country, we have scarcity and inefficiency problems that will be exacerbated by climate change. Location Details:
This role can be performed remotely for Louisiana-based candidates, or on a hybrid arrangement out of the MRD coalition's office in New Orleans, LA.

Overall Function:

The Coastal Resilience Analyst for Louisiana is a member of the EDF's Climate Resilient Coasts and Watersheds team within the People and Nature Program. EDF's Coasts and Watersheds program works in a bold and collaborative manner to ensure resilient ecosystems and communities along coasts and rivers thrive with water and are safe, equitable and prosperous places to live, work and play. This multi-faceted program deals with the many complex challenges associated with restoring natural systems to create sustainable communities in the U.S. and globally.

The Coastal Resilience Analyst will have direct involvement through EDF in Restore the Mississippi River Delta (MRD), a coalition of NGOs working to advance coastal restoration and resilience in Louisiana. They will be responsible for working with collaborative partnerships to advocate for comprehensive, ambitious, science-based, and equitable coastal planning and policies for the MRD coalition. The role will serve as the analyst for the MRD Science Committee under the direction of the Science Committee chair to identify scientific challenges and barriers and develop research projects, strategies, and natural solutions to building resilience. Independent judgment is required to succeed within this fast-paced program. This is an excellent opportunity to use core business skills in support of a transformational advocacy campaign on a complex environmental issue, and to gain knowledge of current issues that are being faced by coastal Louisiana and its people. The Coastal Resilience Analyst will report to the Senior Manager, Climate Resilient Coasts and Watersheds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the MRD Science Committee coordinator, monitoring and tracking deliverables for the MRD Science Committee grant reporting and updates and completing tasks and assignments in a timely manner as assigned by the Science Committee Chair.
  • Research, analyze and promote scientific and economic justifications for natural infrastructure in local, state, and federal policies, and identify potential funding sources.
  • Advocate for key measures to be integrated into ongoing state and regional coastal planning; maintain and update materials, databases, and reports for all team efforts.
  • Manage specific project tasks such as outreach to potential partners, developing work plans and timetables, and managing project work and deliverables. This will likely include:
    • Schedule and attend various team meetings and work with the Chair of the Science Committee to ensure that internal and external team members are on track towards key goals and deliverables;
    • Work with other team members to track and record progress towards project milestones and provide input on plan adjustments when needed; and;
    • Work with team members to provide program reports to EDF leadership and funder partners highlight successes and lessons learned.
  • Identify methods to increase engagement in coastal resilience, including a focus on disadvantaged communities. Identify social science studies that could expand the current knowledge base on risk behavior.
  • Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with government officials, partners, businesses, scientists, and community leaders to build wide-spread support for natural solutions.
  • Conduct relevant scientific and policy research, analysis, and writing for EDF staff as well as broader audiences, including white papers, talking points, fact sheets, Congressional testimony, Op-Eds, and blog posts
  • Apply excellent organizational, communication, and planning skills in preparing correspondence and reports, responding to requests for information, and helping to coordinate activities among team members.
  • Play an integral role in other activities including evaluating and recommending new project ideas; disseminating and communicating project results; and being a team player in the development of a vibrant and entrepreneurial program.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required in marine biology, oceanography, environmental science and policy, social science, physical geography, engineering, or other relevant environmental field of study.
  • A minimum of three years of related work experience, OR comparable combination of advanced degree and applied experience.
  • Ability and willingness to support up to 25% domestic travel (primarily within Louisiana) by car, boat, and potentially plane.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills sufficient to communicate effectively with both scientific and lay audiences on science issues.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic, and creative environment requiring ability to juggle tasks to meet deadlines with rapidly changing business priorities.

  • Working proficiency in GIS is required.
  • Superior skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
