Mechanical Engineer
General Overview:
Emvolon Inc. (emvolon.com) is an innovative MIT climate-tech spin-off on a mission to convert greenhouse gas emissions into carbon-negative fuels and chemicals like green methanol and green ammonia. Leveraging our patented technology, we transform car engines into cost-effective, modular chemical plants. This groundbreaking approach enables us to support various industries, including maritime, aviation, energy, waste management and agriculture, in powering the global economy without emissions. At Emvolon, we are proud to have attracted capital from notable VC funds and have been recognized with grants from ARPA-E, the US Department of Energy, the US Department of Agriculture, and the National Science Foundation.
Role:
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the design and development of laboratory-scale process systems. This role is centered on CAD, drafting, and system layout, but requires sufficient engineering judgment to make sound design decisions, select appropriate components, and support experimental and pilot-scale hardware.
The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys turning rough concepts into clear, buildable designs, is comfortable switching between different drawing types and software tools, and can independently carry out basic engineering calculations to support design decisions. While much of the role involves desk-based design work, this is not a pure drafting position, the engineer will also support hardware buildout and modifications in the lab and must be comfortable working hands-on when needed.
This position is best suited for an early-career mechanical engineer who is detail-oriented, self-motivated, and eager to develop breadth across mechanical design, process systems, and experimental hardware.
Responsibilities:
- Develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed drawings for laboratory and pilot-scale mechanical systems.
- Translate high-level concepts, sketches, and experimental requirements into clear, manufacturable designs.
- Produce and maintain a variety of drawing types, including 3D models, fabrication drawings, P&IDs, plot plans, and basic electrical or instrumentation layouts as needed.
- Perform supporting engineering calculations (e.g., pressure drop, basic stress checks, flow sizing, mixing considerations) to inform design decisions.
- Serve as the primary technical interface with suppliers for component selection and system integration, including product research, technical evaluation, vendor engagement, and Bill of Materials (BOM) and sourcing support.
- Revise and improve designs based on testing feedback, build constraints, and operational experience.
- Maintain clear design documentation and revision control to support reproducibility and safe operation.
- Collaborate closely with other engineers and researchers in a fast-paced R&D environment.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- 2-5 years of experience in a mechanical design, R&D, or industrial engineering role (including relevant internships or co-ops).
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD and mechanical drafting (SolidWorks or equivalent).
- Ability to quickly adapt to new drawing types and software tools (e.g., P&IDs, AutoCAD, Visio).
- Solid grasp of mechanical engineering fundamentals, with the ability to independently perform and defend basic design calculations.
- Experience developing BOMs, sourcing parts, and working with vendors or fabricators.
- Attention to detail and a high standard for drawing quality, accuracy, and completeness.
- Willingness and ability to work hands-on in a laboratory environment when needed.
- Demonstrated ownership mindset, able to take responsibility for assigned work and follow it through to completion.
