EMC Insights is seeking a Senior Commissioning & Energy Management Engineer to support utility-sponsored energy management and commissioning programs throughout New Jersey. The successful candidate will serve as a senior technical resource responsible for evaluating building and industrial system performance, identifying operational energy-saving opportunities, reviewing commissioning studies, validating energy savings estimates, and supporting customers through the implementation of energy management strategies.
This role requires a combination of engineering expertise, building systems knowledge, energy analytics capabilities, and strong communication skills. The ideal candidate has experience performing or reviewing Retro-Commissioning (RCx), Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx), Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx), Virtual Commissioning (VCx), Strategic Energy Management (SEM), or related building optimization services.
In this role, you will also be a key technical and field resource, including overseeing engineering staff’s work for our energy efficiency program implementation contracts with utilities to assess the impact of energy efficiency programs, conduct on-site visits at C&I facilities, and work with various stakeholders, including contractors and end-use customers, to review energy savings estimates for large and sometimes complex energy efficiency projects. You will help expand our services to provide a range of measurement and verification (M&V) support to stakeholders. EMC Insights is dedicated to the quality of our work and our client relationships. What You’ll Do
Commissioning and Energy Management
- Lead technical reviews of Retro-Commissioning (RCx), Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx), Virtual Commissioning (VCx), and Strategic Energy Management (SEM) projects.
- Conduct site assessments of commercial and industrial facilities to identify operational and energy performance improvement opportunities.
- Evaluate HVAC, controls, and process systems to identify operational deficiencies and optimization opportunities.
- Analyze Building Automation System (BAS) trend data, interval meter data, submeters, and other operational datasets.
- Review and evaluate building sequences of operation and control strategies.
- Develop recommendations for operational improvements that improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, equipment reliability, and system performance.
- Support implementation and verification of energy management best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist customers in developing long-term energy management plans and operational performance goals.
Technical Analysis and Engineering
- Review engineering calculations associated with commissioning and energy management projects.
- Develop and verify energy savings estimates for operational, behavioral, and low-cost energy efficiency improvements.
- Perform utility billing, interval data, and performance trend analysis.
- Evaluate measurement and verification (M&V) plans and post-installation performance data.
- Review technical reports prepared by engineering firms, commissioning providers, and trade allies.
- Verify persistence and sustainability of energy savings through ongoing monitoring and analysis.
- Develop technical guidance, calculators, templates, and engineering tools to support program delivery.
Program Delivery and Client Support
- Work directly with building owners, facility managers, energy managers, engineering firms, controls contractors, and service providers.
- Serve as a technical advisor to utility clients and program stakeholders.
- Mentor and provide technical oversight to junior engineering staff.
- Support quality assurance and quality control reviews of technical deliverables.
- Participate in program design improvements and development of new commissioning and energy management offerings.
- Deliver technical presentations and training sessions to customers and program partners.
- Maintain project schedules and manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
What You Bring with You/Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in one or more of the following:
- Retro-Commissioning (RCx)
- Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx)
- Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx)
- Virtual Commissioning (VCx)
- Building Optimization
- Building Analytics
- Strategic Energy Management (SEM)
- Facility Energy Management
- Energy Engineering Consulting
- Controls System Optimization
- Strong understanding of commercial and industrial building systems.
- Experience with HVAC systems, central plants, controls systems, and building operations.
- Experience reviewing technical reports and energy savings calculations.
- Strong written communication and technical reporting skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a client-facing environment.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout New Jersey.
Preferred:
- 7+ years of commissioning, energy management, or building optimization experience.
- Experience supporting utility-sponsored energy efficiency or energy management programs.
- Experience evaluating and troubleshooting:
- Air handling systems
- Chilled water systems
- Hot water systems
- Steam systems
- Variable frequency drives
- Building automation systems
- Industrial process systems
- Experience with energy metering, submetering, and data acquisition systems.
- Familiarity with ASHRAE Guideline 0 and Guideline 36 concepts.
- Experience supporting SEM initiatives, energy teams, organizational change efforts, and continuous improvement programs.
- Experience developing and implementing Measurement and Verification (M&V) plans.
- CEM, CMVP, and/or CBCP certification
- Affiliations with ASHRAE, IEEE, and other relevant industry organizations
- Experience/expertise with data analytics in Excel is required
- Advanced expertise with macros, VBA, or other data analytics platforms such as Python or R

Compensation Range
$100,000 - $130,000 (Currency – USD)
