Job Purpose
The Future Power Markets team is responsible for providing thought leadership in relation to market changes needed to deliver on the renewable electricity targets and is also responsible for delivering large programmes of work to deliver on changes approved by the regulatory authorities.
There are currently a number of key projects which the team is delivering on including;

Key Responsibilities
The Future Markets team is a dynamic team which has been set up to deliver a multi-year programme of work. The team’s function is to deliver key modifications required for EirGrid’s systems and processes to ensure compliance with EU legislation as set out in CEP Regulation 2019/943 Articles 12 & 13 and to support the delivery of Ireland and Northern Ireland’s climate action and renewables targets.

Job Purpose
The Future Power Markets team is responsible for providing thought leadership in relation to market changes needed to deliver on the renewable electricity targets and is also responsible for delivering large programmes of work to deliver on changes approved by the regulatory authorities.
There are currently a number of key projects which the team is delivering on including;
- Scheduling and Dispatch (SDP): This project is developing design changes to our core market and operational systems to deliver on changes associated with the treatment of non-priority dispatch renewables defined in the Clean Energy Package, making improvements on wind dispatch, and updates to scheduling and dispatch process to incorporate new energy storage solutions, low carbon sources of inertia, and the provision of reserves and systems services from new technologies.
- Future Arrangements for System Services (FASS): This project is developing new arrangements for the procurement of innovative System Services which will be vital in facilitating operational change which will allow the power system to be operated with increasingly high levels of low carbon technologies and in achieving our 2030 renewables targets;
- European Integration: Since Brexit the all-island electricity market is no longer integrated with the EU. Once the Celtic Interconnector goes live in 2026, we will be integrated once again to the EU and this will require significant market changes.
- Single Electricity Market (SEM)—GB Arrangements: The SEM market is interconnected with the GB market. Work is ongoing to develop post-Brexit arrangements which includes monitoring of and acting on changes to the structure of the GB markets.
- Competitive market transition to Net Zero: Support the development of electricity policy in achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, in conjunction with the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) and Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DCEE).
- Long Duration Energy Storage: Investigating the options for a market mechanism to incentivise long duration energy storage.
- Capacity Market Development: Lead the TSO support of the Capacity Remuneration Mechanism, in collaboration with industry, regulators and stakeholders
- Tariff Policy: Lead the development of new tariff policy arrangements and co-ordinate the response to EU guidance on tariffication and approaches to reducing network charges

Multi‑Year Market Strategy & Planning
- Lead the development of multi‑year market evolution plans aligned with national policy, European regulatory frameworks, and system needs.
- Conduct horizon scanning to identify emerging trends, policy shifts, and technology developments relevant to future market design.
- Develop scenarios and long‑term strategic options to support executive decision‑making.
- Coordinate cross‑functional input (markets, system operations, interconnection, flexibility, innovation, regulatory, commercial).
- Analyse existing and upcoming regulatory frameworks, identifying gaps, risks and opportunities for market enhancements.
- Translate strategic needs into regulatory proposals and work with Regulatory Affairs to influence outcomes.
- Prepare materials for regulatory submissions, consultations, and high‑level policy discussions.
- Build strong relationships with key external stakeholders (regulators, government departments, European bodies, industry groups).
- Assess the market and regulatory conditions required to scale flexibility solutions such as demand-side response, storage, hybrid assets, and distributed energy resources.
- Evaluate the system and market impacts of new technologies, including digital platforms, AI-enabled optimisation, long duration energy storage, and sector coupling solutions.
- Identify barriers to market entry and propose mechanisms to enable investment and participation from innovative technologies.
- Work closely with innovation and system planning teams to ensure alignment between market design and future system needs.
- Produce high‑quality strategic insights, briefings, and market assessments for senior leadership.
- Develop models, frameworks or structured methodologies for evaluating market changes, regulatory options and technology readiness.
- Benchmark against international best practices and market evolutions in comparable systems.
- Lead the planning, organisation and facilitation of Future Markets workshops with industry, including suppliers, generators, technology providers, large energy users, investors and representative bodies.
- Develop clear communication materials including presentations, briefing papers, discussion guides that articulate the organisation’s future markets vision and strategic direction.
- Ensure complex market design concepts are translated into clear, accessible messages for stakeholders with varying levels of technical knowledge.
- Serve as a key spokesperson for future markets workstreams, presenting at industry events, conferences and regulatory forums.
- Build strong, trust‑based relationships with industry participants to ensure transparent, constructive engagement on market changes.
- Capture stakeholder feedback and ensure it informs internal strategy development and regulatory proposals.
- Act as a strategic thought leader within the organisation, promoting understanding of long‑term market direction.
- Lead cross‑functional working groups and steering committees related to market evolution.
- Support senior leaders with briefing packs, market narratives and external communication strategies.
- Mentor junior team members and promote a collaborative, forward‑looking team culture.
- Relevant third level degree in Engineering, economics or business with a minimum of 6 years power system industry and electricity market expertise and experience;
- Strong experience in electricity markets, market design, energy regulation or system planning.
- Demonstrated ability to develop strategic, multi‑year plans in complex market environments.
- Experience engaging with stakeholders at senior levels across industry, government or regulatory bodies.
- Excellent presentation, communication and facilitation skills including experience running workshops or consultations.
- Ability to simplify complex issues and communicate clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Strong analytical and conceptual capability.
- Ability to manage cross‑functional teams or lead strategic programmes.
- Experience in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work effectively as part of a team.
