Governance Programme Manager
EirGrid Group is at the heart of the electricity system on the island of Ireland. We operate and develop the transmission grid, the wholesale electricity market and interconnectors linking the island’s transmission system to those in other countries. This is reflected in our Purpose “Transform the Power System for Future Generation” and in the primary goal of our recently launched 2020-2025 strategy “Lead the Island’s Electricity Sector on Sustainability and Decarbonisation”.
The Chief Governance Office is a directorate within the Group with a mission of ensuring that the highest standards of excellence are maintained in the delivery of risk management, governance, legal, compliance and company secretarial activities and initiatives.
The Opportunity
The Governance Programme Manager will lead EirGrid’s corporate governance and assurance programmes, ensuring that the organisation operates to the highest standards of accountability, transparency, and regulatory compliance. This role is pivotal in embedding robust governance frameworks and delivering assurance activities that safeguard organisational integrity and performance.
The role holder will oversee the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of governance and assurance processes, ensuring alignment with statutory obligations, industry best practice, and EirGrid’s strategic objectives. They will work closely with senior leadership, board committees, and cross-functional teams to strengthen governance structures, monitor compliance with governance codes, and provide assurance on the effectiveness of internal controls.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Programme Oversight
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for EirGrid’s governance and assurance programmes, ensuring alignment with organisational priorities and regulatory expectations.
- Lead and develop a high-performing team, fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.
- Act as the senior authority on governance and assurance matters, advising leadership and governance bodies on emerging risks, compliance obligations, and best practices.
- Oversee the design and implementation of EirGrid’s corporate governance framework, ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements (e.g., Companies Act, governance codes).
- Support the Board and its Committees by ensuring governance processes, charters, and reporting structures are effective and up to date.
- Monitor adherence to governance codes and standards, identifying gaps and recommending corrective actions.
- Ensure timely and accurate delivery of governance reporting to executive and board-level bodies.
- Coordinate governance reviews and benchmarking exercises to maintain leading governance practices.
- Act as a key liaison with external stakeholders on governance matters.
- Design, develop and implement EirGrid’s assurance framework, ensuring robust processes for monitoring and validating the effectiveness of internal controls.
- Lead the planning and execution of assurance activities, including risk-based reviews, compliance assessments, and control testing.
- Provide independent assurance to senior leadership and governance bodies on the adequacy and effectiveness of governance, risk, and compliance arrangements.
- Ensure findings from assurance activities are documented, communicated, and tracked through to resolution.
- Champion a data-driven approach to assurance, leveraging analytics and technology to enhance oversight and reporting.
- Drive the combined assurance agenda in the EirGrid Group, collaborating with Internal Audit and other internal assurance providers.
- Collaborate with risk management and compliance teams to ensure governance and assurance activities are aligned with enterprise risk priorities.
- Support integration of governance and assurance considerations into corporate strategy, business planning and operational decision-making.
- Monitor emerging regulatory and governance trends, assessing implications for EirGrid and advising leadership accordingly.
- Promote a strong governance culture across the organisation through targeted training and awareness initiatives.
- Ensure employees understand governance and assurance responsibilities and are equipped to meet evolving standards.
- Proactively identify opportunities to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of processes and structures, leveraging technology, automation, and best practices.
- Over ten years of experience in governance, assurance or related fields, including significant time in leadership or senior advisory roles.
- Qualified to degree level and/or professional qualification in a relevant discipline.
- Proven track record in designing, implementing and/or overseeing frameworks, programmes and processes.
- Strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Skilled in stakeholder management and influencing at all levels, including Executive and Leadership level, while maintaining strong credibility and relationships.
- Excellent presentation and communications skills, verbal and written.
- Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
- Experience in regulated environments or the energy sector is advantageous but not essential.
