The Role

We are looking for a CTO to lead the full build of two new technology products from the ground up. This role goes beyond technical execution. It demands clear architectural thinking, team leadership and the ability to run a technology organisation with precision.

You will own the technical strategy, design the architecture, and hire and lead a high-performing engineering team.

The work includes backend systems, automation pipelines, internal tooling and selective use of blockchain for verification, integrity and record-immutability where appropriate.

Your decisions will shape the company’s long-term technological direction. You will set a high bar for simplicity, stability and correctness in everything we build.

This position starts as a 20-hour-per-week independent contractor role. It offers significant freedom, clear ownership and the chance to define the technical foundation of the company from day one. For the right person, this is a pathway to a full-time leadership role with long-term upside built into the structure.

Responsibilities:

  • Define the technical architecture across backend systems, automation, data flows and blockchain-based verification components.
  • Build and lead a small, exceptional engineering team across backend, frontend and infrastructure.
  • Establish engineering standards, documentation practices and clean internal workflows that scale.
  • Translate product requirements into structured implementation plans with clear timelines and ownership.
  • Ensure systems remain simple, resilient and predictable at scale.
  • Oversee infrastructure, security, reliability and data integrity, including immutable record-keeping where blockchain is appropriate.
  • Make decisive architectural decisions and maintain strict discipline to prevent unnecessary complexity.
  • Work closely with product, operations, compliance and integrity teams with clear, direct communication.
  • Build internal tools that automate manual processes and reduce operational overhead.
  • Plan future hires and shape the long-term direction of the technology organisation.

What Success Looks Like

  • Two new products are built on time with clean architecture, reliable systems and no unnecessary features.
  • Blockchain components are used only where they add genuine value: verification, immutability, auditability.
  • The engineering team is small, focused, high-trust and operating with strong ownership.
  • Systems behave predictably under load and scale without major redesign.
  • Cross-functional teams receive rapid, clear decisions with no drift or ambiguity.
  • Internal tools make operations smoother and more efficient.
  • Risks are surfaced early, decisions are made quickly, and implementation is disciplined.
  • The company moves fast because the technology foundation is solid, well-structured and easy to reason about.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience architecting and delivering complex technical systems end-to-end.
  • Strong backend engineering background with deep understanding of automation, APIs and systems design.
  • Experience building and leading high-performing engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with blockchain components — especially those used for immutability, verification and audit-ready record-keeping.
  • Comfort operating in environments where simplicity, clarity and correctness matter more than feature volume.
  • Ability to translate broad product direction into structured technical plans.
  • Strong communication skills and a preference for direct, concise dialogue.
  • Ability to make high-consequence decisions with confidence and accountability.
