Trustee for Climate Charity, hands-on - Volunteer

Apply now
Join EcoCounts as a hands-on Trustee to help shape and grow a dynamic climate charity. Use your governance expertise to drive local climate action, influence strategy, and support a small, agile team working to make carbon reduction meaningful and impactful.

What difference will you make?

Hopefully this role description conveys the potential, the challenge and uncommon opportunity EcoCounts has to create a break-through in the climate crisis. You would be

  • developing governance experience
  • expanding networks
  • gaining leadership in climate strategy

We only have 3 trustees so when any of them are unavailable, we really feel it. If you're smashing it out the park one month, but just staying in touch the next, that's OK. We'll be able to provide you with all you need to be productive and help us make progress.

Support, induction and ongoing development will be discussed and provided as far as possible.

The way we have found to bring people onboard after a mutually agreeable first meeting is to give the candidate a small task that would benefit us in the area under discussion, giving both parties the chance to see how the other works before either makes a firm commitment.

Please note we are building relationships with the councils in our area (Westminster, Camden, Haringey, Hackney, Islington and the City) based on the data of our participants being residents of these councils. We also seek to network strongly in the local area. For that and other reasons, we are only looking for candidates in this area.

What are we looking for?

  • awareness of the serious nature of the crisis as per the UN IPCC reports (and the contrast to the approach taken by the UK and Net Zero 2050)
  • strong desire to see society make an urgent response to climate change
  • ability to work online, in person, in different environments with different types of people
  • consistency and good communication
  • co-operation, exchange of ideas, flexibility
  • ability to put ideas across clearly while seeking first to understand others

What will you be doing?

We are currently completely volunteer-led, agile, pragmatic and ambitious. We would like to build up our trustee board with trustees who are keen to help drive EcoCounts forward through active involvement in what is an exciting time to get involved. You could help lead a climate action group that achieves measurable carbon reduction and policy influence at the local level.

We’re looking for someone to jump right in with our small and dynamic team to provide guidance, energy and insight to help us develop.

Do you have experience with

  • charity governance
  • policy creation and management
  • strategy development combining marketing, fundraising, volunteer management and finance & business planning
  • you’ll need an awareness of the serious nature of the crisis and the need for radical action by governments, i.e. a strong desire to see society make an urgent response to climate change
  • ability to work online, in person, in different environments with different types of people
  • consistency and good communication on instant messaging channels, emails and other
  • co-operative nature and appreciation for exchange of ideas, flexibility and openness to feedback
  • ability to understand our Carbon Accounts concept, which is not difficult but does have extensive impacts
  • free some Monday evenings for our in-person meetings

We welcome applications from people of diverse backgrounds and experience levels, where lack of direct trusteeship experience can be replaced by other transferable skills, such as company director or manager.
