Overview

Based within the Clean Economy petal, which focuses on industry transition, trade and investment, this position will contribute to developing and delivering E3G’s work to drive climate action through trade and investment policy. The immediate focus of the role in 2026/2027 will be on reforming the international investment regime, based on investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanisms, by combining thought leadership with political analysis and policy advocacy.

The successful candidate will lead E3G’s diplomatic engagement and coalition-building efforts to advance reform of the international investment regime. This will include shaping strategic priorities, leading analytical work, identifying priority opportunities for intervention, and managing relationships with key governments, civil society organisations and other stakeholders. The role will require a strong understanding of trade and investment policy, alongside a keen interest in climate and energy policies.

Over time, the successful candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to the broader priorities of E3G’s Trade & Investment team, helping to identify and develop new avenues for advancing climate action through international cooperation on trade and investment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver E3G’s thought leadership on aligning international investment regime with climate goals.
  • Lead analytical work on the risks associated with status quo in investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), building on E3G’s existing data analysis on global fossil fuel assets protected by ISDS. This may include updating and expanding existing datasets in partnership with an external data analyst.
  • Produce high-quality written outputs, such as blogs and briefings, to communicate E3G’s analysis and proposals to public and private audiences.
  • Track relevant developments in international trade and investment policy, as well as emerging research and debate on investment governance.
  • Manage and strengthen relationships with external stakeholders, including governments, civil society organisations, and research organisations both in the UK and internationally. In particular, identify opportunities for influence and lead inside-track advocacy with key governments, in collaboration with civil society partners.
  • Represent E3G at relevant external events and liaise with media as needed.
  • Work collaboratively and flexibly across E3G’s Clean Economy team to support broader priorities relating to trade and industry transition. Liaise with other colleagues working on climate diplomacy, finance, energy transition, to integrate this work across relevant outputs and initiatives.
  • Provide administrative support where needed, including organising events and preparing
  • Undertake occasional international travel where necessary. We are happy to discuss flexibility around travel requirements where this may otherwise present a barrier to application.

This is not an exhaustive list, and the post-holder will be asked to undertake other tasks as required within the team and the wider organisation.
