Overview
This role provides an opportunity to gain practical, on-the-job experience while working towards a Level 6 degree in Environmental Sciences within a civil engineering environment.
The apprentice will support both the delivery of civil engineering projects and the organisation’s wider sustainability objectives. This will include assisting in the management of environmental impacts on-site, as well as contributing to the company’s overall sustainability performance, including carbon reduction, resource efficiency, and environmental planning.
The programme is designed to develop technical knowledge, professional behaviours, and a broad understanding of environmental management across both operational and corporate functions.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the implementation of environmental management plans for civil engineering projects
- Assist site teams in complying with environmental legislation, permits and planning conditions
- Participate in site inspections, environmental audits and monitoring activities
- Assist with environmental incident prevention, reporting and investigation
- Support waste management, pollution prevention, and sustainable material use on site
- Maintain accurate environmental records and documentation
- Support the development and implementation of the company’s sustainability strategy
- Assist in monitoring and reporting environmental performance metrics (e.g. carbon emissions, energy use, waste, water)
- Contribute to carbon reduction initiatives and net zero implementation
- Assist with the preparation of sustainability reports and disclosures
- Support data collection and analysis for ESG reporting and compliance
- Promote sustainable practices across the organisation, including offices and operational teams
- Support internal awareness initiatives and engagement on sustainability topics
Learning & Development
- Work towards a Level 6 qualification in Environmental Sciences
- Develop knowledge in areas such as:
- Environmental management in construction
- Sustainability and climate change
- Carbon management and net zero strategies
- Environmental legislation and compliance
- Resource efficiency and circular economy principles
- Gain practical experience aligned with academic learning across both site and business functions
- Work towards professional accreditation (e.g., Practitioner membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment)
Technical Skills
- Basic understanding of environmental science and sustainability
- Interest in sustainability, climate change, and environmental performance
- Competency in mathematics and data handling
- Familiarity with IT systems (e.g. Excel) and willingness to learn reporting and environmental tools

- Strong work ethic and willingness to learn
- Interest in both environmental management and sustainability strategy
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Proactive and able to use initiative
- Strong attention to detail, particularly in data and reporting

Entry Requirements
- A-Level qualifications (or equivalent), typically including a STEM subject such as biology, Geography, or Environmental Science
- GCSEs (or equivalent) including Mathematics and English at Grade 4 or above
- Eligibility to enrol on a Level 6 degree apprenticeship programme
Working Environment
- Combination of site-based and office-based work
- Exposure to active construction environments and business operations
- Requirement to adhere to strict health, safety and environmental standards
- Travel to project sites and offices as required
Health & Safety
- Comply with all company and legal health & safety requirements
- Follow environmental protection procedures and site controls
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
- Participate in environmental training
Additional Information
- The apprentice will be supported by both operational teams and sustainability leads
- Study time will be allocated in line with apprenticeship requirements
- Performance will be reviewed regularly against learning and work objectives
