We’re now looking for a Principal Engineering leader to drive design and delivery of our embedded hardware and firmware systems from concept through to production. The role will be based on-site at our Toowoomba/Gatton Production Facility, with expected travel between Australia and China to support hands-on implementation of our technology projects, assist with recruitment, and provide ongoing support and supervision of our team in China.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead a team of firmware engineers, setting clear objectives, fostering innovation, promoting collaborative and results-driven culture
  • Review and provide guidance on schematics, PCB layouts, component selection, and system design for reliability, compliance, and cost optimization
  • Collaborate with product management on technical feasibility and design trade-offs
  • Support and lead root-cause analysis for hardware issues from initial prototypes through production


Skills and Experience (essential):

  • 12+ years’ experience in hardware product design and development
  • Proven track record delivering production-grade hardware from concept through manufacturing
  • Embedded software development
  • Microcontroller architectures
  • Communication protocols
  • PCB design
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Leadership experience or strong leadership capability
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Low-power modes, interrupts, fuse bits, hardware timers, and peripherals
  • Communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, RS485, and MQTT
  • PCB design tools such as Altium, Eagle, KiCAD, or similar
  • Soldering and SMD hot air rework
  • IoT, satellite, and terrestrial telemetry


Skills and Experience (advantageous):

Experience with satellite communication systems such as:

  • Swarm
  • Myriota
  • Astrocast


Experience with cellular and LPWAN technologies:

  • NB-IoT
  • 3G/4G
  • LoRaWAN


Experience designing for:


  • Secure communication
  • Bandwidth-constrained environments
  • Efficient message structures


Experience working in agricultural, remote, or harsh operating environments and leading distributed or international engineering teams.
