POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Practice Area Manager is part of the Distribution business area's leadership team at Danovo Energy Solutions. This position is responsible for the Capacity Planning practice area (PA) and partial P&L responsibility, reporting to the Distribution Planning & Studies Business Area Manager (BAM). The primary duty is to provide business and team leadership, ensuring operational excellence by applying technical knowledge of utility-focused distribution planning studies, area planning, secondary networks, volt/var optimization, and area planning. As a trusted advisor to customers, the Practice Area Manager interacts with external industry stakeholders and partners closely with our parent company, Quanta Services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Leadership
- Lead complex utility data and engineering workflow projects end‐to‐end, ensuring strong outcomes, adoption, and measurable value.
- Own growth of the practice area through solution design, estimates, proposals, and client relationship leadership.
- Approve and enforce study methodologies, modeling standards, assumptions and acceptance criteria to ensure consistent, auditable results across clients and regions.
- Oversee distribution system modeling and simulation (power-flow, short-circuit, protection, steady-state and dynamic scenarios) and sign off on technical deliverables.
- Ensure modeling fidelity between distribution planning models and operational systems (DMS/SCADA/OMS/GIS) and coordinate with operations/DA teams on device models, protection settings and control logic.
- Maintain technical alignment with industry standards and regulators (IEEE, NERC, state interconnection rules, utility tariffs and interconnection procedures).
- Represent Danovo professionally with customers, partners, and industry groups.
Team & Delivery Leadership
- Build, manage, and develop high‐performing teams through clear goals, coaching, and mentorship.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, on scope, and on budget, with a strong focus on quality and customer satisfaction.
- Oversee resource planning, utilization, and sustainable workloads.
- Foster accountability, transparency, and collaboration across teams.
Business Development
- Work directly with customers on delivery and new project acquisition.
- Promote and deepen Danovo's service offerings within the utility industry.
- Support cross‐practice collaboration and provide strategic input on connected initiatives.
- Use existing contacts or create new ones to generate projects.
- Represent the company at industry events and forums.
- Stay informed on market and regulatory trends and share insights internally.
Strategy & Growth
- Build and execute practice‐area strategy and growth plans.
- Support succession planning and identify high‐potential talent.
- Make decisions that support long‐term business growth and align with company vision.
- Partner with vendors to develop training, demos, and solution accelerators.
- Stay current on industry and technology trends.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
TRAVEL
The ideal candidate is willing and able to travel to client locations and industry meetings, typically up to 25% depending on the assignment.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree required in Engineering or related technical field.
- Advanced degree in Engineering or related technical field preferred.
- 10+ years in utility industry with 4–6+ years in the electric power and energy consulting industry, including experience with people management.
Skills & Systems
- Distribution planning tools: hands-on experience with industry modeling tools (examples: CYME, OpenDSS, GridLAB-D, Synergi/ISP, PSSE or equivalent) and the ability to evaluate/approve tool outputs and scripts.
- Operational systems integration: familiarity with DMS/SCADA/OMS and the implications of operational telemetry / control on planning models.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Power systems fundamentals: deep knowledge of distribution system theory (three-phase unbalanced power flow, modeling of single-phase laterals, distribution transformer behavior, voltage regulation, protection coordination).
- Ability to apply modern AI tools to improve productivity and solution quality.
- Proven success in financial management, business development, and organizational leadership.
- Solid understanding of the utility industry and power/energy markets.
- Strong communication, conflict management, and collaboration skills.
LOCATION
Danovo Energy Solutions has offices in Raleigh, NC, Markham, ON, Lombard, IL, and San Clemente, CA. The preferred location for this role is the Raleigh, NC or the San Clemente, CA office. We offer hybrid employment that supports a blend of in-office and/or remote work.
