Assistant Vice President - Finance - CleanTech
About Company
The company operates in the renewable energy industry, providing residential clean energy and rooftop solar solutions for homeowners.
Job Description
The role:
You will be first AVP of the company. The person who makes our numbers trustworthy, fast and decision ready as we scale across cities. Today the founders hold much of the finance function themselves. Your job is to take it off their hands and make it better.
This is a builder role, not a caretaker one. Half of it is controllership: a clean monthly close, a ledger the business can rely on for margins, and compliance that never becomes a fire. The other half is business finance: unit economics by city and channel, a plan the leadership runs the company against, and an investor narrative backed by numbers that reconcile.
What you will own:
1. Controllership and close
• Run a monthly close that finishes on a fixed calendar, so the general ledger, not side spreadsheets, is the source of truth for P&L and gross margin.
• Set up city-wise and channel-wise reporting from the ledger: direct, financed and franchise sales each read cleanly.
• Tighten procure-to-pay and site expense controls, including site cash, vendor approvals and inventory reconciliation.
• Own revenue recognition and receivables across customer payments, financing partner disbursements (net of subvention) and PM Surya Ghar subsidy flows.
2. Compliance, tax and audit
• Own GST, TDS, ROC and statutory compliance end to end, with a calendar nobody has to chase.
• Run the statutory audit and keep the books audit-ready all year, not just in April.
• Work with company secretarial and legal advisors on board and shareholder matters.
3. Planning and business finance
• Own the annual operating plan and a rolling forecast the leadership team actually runs the business against.
• Build unit economics per installation: kW sold, realisation, BOS and installation cost, gross margin, by city and system configuration.
• Partner with sales, supply chain and operations heads on pricing, procurement and expansion decisions, with a clear point of view, not just a model.
4. Cash, treasury and investors
• Manage cash and working capital weekly: collections, subsidy receivables, vendor terms and runway.
• Own the monthly MIS and board pack, and the numbers behind every investor conversation.
• Lead diligence, data rooms and financial modelling for future fundraises and debt or working capital lines.
5. Systems and team
• Take an AI-first approach to processes, reporting and systems: build fast, check rigorously, then automate. Invoice booking, bank reconciliation and MIS on Zoho Books are the first candidates.
• Lead and grow the accounts team; hire for the next stage when the volume calls for it.
What you will bring:
Must-haves
• Chartered Accountant, with 6 to 10 years of post-qualification experience.
• Several of those years in high-growth, venture-backed businesses with physical operations: supply chain, inventory, field teams, multiple cities.
• Hands-on ownership of a monthly close, statutory audit and GST/TDS compliance. You have done the work yourself, not only reviewed it.
• Strong business finance: you have built unit economics and gross margin models, and used them to change a pricing, procurement or expansion decision.
• Comfort with ambiguity and messy data. You can build the process and the spreadsheet on the same day.
• Clear, direct communication with founders, operators and investors.
Good-to-haves
• CFA or equivalent depth in valuation and financial modelling.
• Experience supporting a fundraise or setting up debt and working capital lines.
• Experience running finance on Zoho Books or a similar mid-market ERP & automating around it.
• Prior experience building or leading a small accounts team.
