POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Fianarantsoa, Madagascar

Conservation International Madagascar operates within the Ambositra–Vondrozo Forest Corridor (COFAV) as the delegated management authority, ensuring the sustainable management of this protected area. CI implements a range of initiatives and projects designed to support both the conservation of natural resources and the socio-economic development of local communities. The organization’s regional team, based in Fianarantsoa, comprises technical and administrative staff under the supervision of a Regional Director who also serves as Head of Office.

The Field Agent position is a key operational role, responsible for the direct implementation of activities supporting community-based natural resource management and local development. Emphasis is placed on promoting sustainable livelihoods and agricultural value chains, as well as assisting communities in forest restoration and reforestation efforts. These responsibilities are part of a project funded by Topsoe A/S (Denmark), which supports Nature Climate Solutions and Nature Positive Economies across the protected areas managed by CI in Madagascar.

Field Agents work under the direct supervision of a Technical Officer and collaborate closely with the CI team, local partners, communities, local authorities, and GOM technical services. They play a vital role in data collection for monitoring and reporting purposes and maintain strong partnerships with local stakeholders, including community-based organizations, including VOI, producer groups, cooperatives, and local authorities.

Responsibilities

  • Implement field activities related to sustainable livelihoods, agricultural value chains development, and community-based natural resource management within the COFAV landscape.
  • Provide technical support and training to local communities, producer groups, cooperatives, and VOIs, particularly in sustainable agricultural production, forest restoration, reforestation, and sustainable land-use practices.
  • Collect, verify, and report field data for monitoring, evaluation, and project performance tracking, in compliance with CI’s standards and donor requirements.
  • Strengthen partnerships with local stakeholders, including decentralized technical services (STD), territorial authorities (CTD), and other field actors, to ensure coordinated and inclusive implementation.
  • Support awareness and capacity-building activities aimed at improving community understanding of conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and climate-related initiatives.
  • Monitor field dynamics, including threats to natural resources, community needs, and emerging opportunities for livelihood development.
  • Ensure compliance with CI policies, safety protocols, and ethical standards during all field operations.

People and Resource Management Responsibilities

  • Does not manage staff, is not accountable for an operating budget, or managing public or private funds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Near 80% of the time in the field (sometimes in remote and landlocked areas).
  • Typical office environment. May need to work beyond normal work hours as needed.

Qualifications

Required

  • Up to 2 years of experience working with COBA/VOI cooperatives, producer organizations.
  • Knowledge of sustainable development practices and climate change adaptation strategies.
  • Strong understanding of the context and challenges of agricultural value chains in rural areas.
  • Proven experience in building partnerships with local stakeholders, including community organizations (COBA/VOI, KASTI, etc.), local authorities, and preferably with the private sector.
  • Proficient in data collection, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Strong communication skills in both local languages and English.

  • Proficiency in computer applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in Malagasy and French.
  • Ability to work effectively in rural settings under basic conditions.

Preferred

  • A relevant degree in environmental sciences, social sciences, Agriculture, agribusiness, development studies, or a related field.
  • Experience in working on Community-Based Natural Resources Management, with VOI/COBA.
  • Good knowledge of COFAV regions will be a plus.
  • Good level in French (spoken, Written); English is a plus.
  • Ability to operate a motorcycle (Category A license).
  • Ability to work in remote and challenging environments.
