Duties and Responsibilities:

Emphasizing on wildlife, the Biodiversity Manager will be the focal point for all biodiversity works in the Project Area. He/she will provide technical guidance to the CCNCS Project, government, NGO and community partners supporting the effective development, planning, management, and implementation of flora and fauna research-related activities. The Biodiversity Manager will be responsible for designing and providing training and oversight of all biodiversity-related activities across the landscape, with a specific focus on implementing Component 6 on Improved Community-supported Biodiversity Management.

The task includes providing technical support and guidance towards strategy, planning and project implementation particularly on conservation models (including community livelihoods), capacity building and project documentation in the areas of carbon stock and biodiversity improvements (including generation of co-benefits) across select municipalities and ensure convergence among all components of the project to achieve desired outcomes.


Working closely with the Palawan Field Team, the Biodiversity Manager shall:

1. Lead the implementation of the detailed workplan for Component 6 (on Improved Community supported Biodiversity Management), including enhancement as necessary for annual and quarterly plans and budget

2. Lead the HCV biodiversity assessment and monitoring work of the Project. 3. Lead the design and supervise the implementation of existing biological surveys and monitoring activities in both terrestrial and mangrove forests and develop new strategies to better understand ecological function in the landscape.

4. Continue to develop and expand existing biological surveys on priority species such as camera trapping, line transect surveys, occupancy surveys, DNA surveys, working closely with field teams to deliver accurate biodiversity data in the Mount Mantalingahan Landscape.

5. Lead the development and implementation of site-specific biodiversity monitoring plan.

6. Supervise consultant teams who will conduct biodiversity assessment and other related activities.

7. Collaborate closely with the M&E and GIS Teams to establish an efficient and effective data storage and analysis system, and lead trainings as needed to ensure the field team and community partners has the capacity to use and maintain the data management system.

8. Submit routine quarterly summary reports assessing progress in biological monitoring, e.g. technical reports on key species monitoring activities, to be made available to the CI Network and all relevant conservation partners.

9. Coordinate with Palawan Field Lead and project personnel to ensure that agreed work is well organized with partners and completed on schedule. 10. Provide technical assistance in the terrestrial and mangrove restoration work in the selected project sites and ensure quality performance by all involved.

11. Ensure partner/stakeholder standards and interests are represented and incorporated into project deliverables.

12. Guide and facilitate strategies and measures to achieve uptake of project findings into policy and strategic planning processes at the national level

13. Contribute to internal reporting, donor inquiries, and communications.

14. Perform related duties as assigned.


  • This position directly supervises project the Biodiversity Monitoring Coordinator.
  • Serves as subject matter expert on the project’s HCV biodiversity assessment and monitoring.
  • Accountable for managing field gadgets, tools, and equipment.


  • Advanced degree in natural resource management or fields related to biodiversity conservation
  • At least 5 years practical experience in conservation science, scientific research and/or biological monitoring in the Philippines or Southeast Asia.
  • At least 3 years on the ground experience in biological research designing projects, training and supervising field teams
  • At least 2-year experience in project management in an international development organization or similar, of which 3 years should be in related fields.
  • Dedication to basic principles and objectives of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources
  • Familiarity with appropriate wildlife survey and monitoring methods, including Distance Sampling, Occupancy, Capture-Mark-Recapture etc.
  • Knowledge of community development to set and achieve objectives for improving living condition of community and environmental sustainability.
  • Experience in working with Government officials, national and international experts, and local communities.
  • Ability to work well with, and contribute effectively, to a multicultural team * Ability to carry out field work that involves walking long distances through difficult terrain and in tropical heat
  • Ability to teach complex scientific methods and procedures to field staff and community partners
  • Knowledgeable of and sensitive to local community's culture and rights
  • Ability to diagnose problems and identify solutions.
  • Strong organization and time management skills. * Team player and able to work effectively with diverse groups in a multicultural environment.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, multitask, set priorities, and deliver quality results.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and under general supervision.
  • Understanding of the socio-economic and environmental issues facing Palawan, indigenous peoples, and local communities is strongly preferred.
  • Willing to abide by CI Code of Ethics and Policies.

Working Conditions:

(in keeping with Philippine Government and CIPFI regulations health and safety regulations during COVID-19 pandemic)

  • Periodic travel to remote project sites with a long and strenuous hike.
  • Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outside the normal work schedule to meet project deadlines. * Flexibility in performing other duties assigned by the supervisor.
