Media Relations Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY
Conservation International seeks a proactive media relations specialist with writing and pitching experience to join its media relations team. This position will support the continued recognition of Conservation International as a leading and growing global organization.
The media relations specialist plays an essential role in helping raise the profile of Conservation International and its leadership and subject matter experts on the topics of climate change, climate finance, and global conservation. Primary responsibilities include proactively researching and identifying opportunities to showcase leadership in the press and through speaking opportunities designed to generate growth and continued media relationships.
Media strategy, writing, and pitching will be prioritized in an effort to build a Conservation International “speaker’s bureau.” Additional responsibilities will include the coordination of press releases, announcements, and media campaigns in alignment with Conservation International’s corporate partners. Additionally, support of some administrative work (clips, media lists, board, and annual reports) will be required. Additional support of the media team with the pitching of research and writing for the press as needed.
The candidate should have a minimum of 4 to 6 years of experience working in proactive media and events outreach. The ideal candidate will have an agency background and track record in pitching thought leaders and placing stories/interviews.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identifying press opportunities and speaking engagements for leadership across a range of outlets and events.
  • Research, discover, cultivate new, creative opportunities, including publication launches, reporter beat changes, special issues, etc.
  • Writing for the news media and pitch writing.
  • Relationship building with key media contacts. You will serve as one of the media team’s key relationship cultivators.
  • Serving as key point person for Conservation International’s brand partnerships, including coordinating press materials, strategy, and outreach.
  • Other media relations work as assigned (support of research releases, message development, and press outreach).

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position is based in Arlington, VA.
  • May work outside of regular business hours when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 4 to 6 years of experience in media relations or journalism with strong writing and research skills.
  • Strong interest in the news, magazines, podcasts, and other general consumer outlets.
  • Strong organizational skills and collaborative work style.
  • Experience with PR tracking tools (Cision, etc).
  • A team player and eager to develop a career in media relations.

Preferred

  • Spanish language skills is a plus, but not required.
