Job Title: Energy Efficiency Project Engineer II

Job Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey

DESCRIPTION:

  • Seeking a qualified Project Engineer II to support commercial and industrial (C&I) energy efficiency and demand management programs in New Jersey. Responsibilities may include energy auditing, energy analysis, energy modeling, engineering reviews, technical writing, and project management. Candidates must possess strong technical capabilities including knowledge of building systems, energy efficiency strategies, demand management, sustainability and decarbonization.
  • The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with the Advanced Energy team and external stakeholders to provide engineering and auditing support for market-transforming programs across multiple building sectors. The role involves a mix of office-based technical analysis and on-site project fieldwork on a diverse range of commercial and industrial (C&I) projects with varied energy systems. It includes frequent interaction with clients and may require local travel.

The candidate will be expected to apply sound judgment and experience to manage complex tasks, meet project goals, and deliver high-quality results in a dynamic, client-facing environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct facility ASHRAE Level II and III audits for schools, hospitals, multifamily buildings, universities, municipalities, and other commercial properties.
  • Perform facility utility analysis, energy benchmarking, energy balancing, and energy savings calculations.
  • Review and develop calculations and assumptions used to estimate or measure energy savings.
  • Produce technical reports that summarize project scope, methodologies, assumptions, findings, and recommendations.
  • Conduct on-site data collection and deploy metering equipment to support energy analysis and validate equipment performance.
  • Analyze large datasets and operational trends to support engineering decisions and verify measure savings.
  • Support implementation of energy efficiency measures such as HVAC upgrades, electrification (e.g., heat pumps), lighting, controls, envelope improvements, and refrigeration systems.
  • Deliver high quality reports and calculations requiring minimal internal review efforts.
  • Manage multiple project schedules, deliverables, and budgets simultaneously while meeting deadlines and client expectations.
  • Participate in meetings and presentations, providing clear and accurate responses to technical and program-related questions.
  • Providing technical assistance to customers, contractors, and other stakeholders including support with energy savings calculations and meeting program requirements.
  • Deploy metering equipment and analyzing large data sets to validate baseline and replacement equipment operation.
  • Stay informed about energy issues and industry trends through regular technical reading and participation in local and national professional organizations.
  • Collaborate and work cross-functionally with a large and diverse team of project engineers located throughout the East Region and nationally.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Energy, or related discipline).
  • 3–6 years of experience with energy auditing (ASHRAE Level I–III), energy analysis, energy modeling, technical report writing, or engineering analysis.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, energy systems, building science, and high-performance design.
  • Hands-on field experience with mechanical and energy systems is a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with energy modeling tools such as eQUEST, EnergyPlus, Trane TRACE, or similar software.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet-based energy calculations and custom analysis tools.
  • Experience developing ECM recommendations and quantifying savings for technologies such as HVAC, motors, lighting, controls, refrigeration, building envelope, and appliances.
  • Knowledge of energy codes and standards including ASHRAE and IECC.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Licenses, certifications and accreditations are a plus (e.g., Professional Engineer, Engineer in Training, Certified Energy Manager, Building Energy Modeling Professional).
  • Team-oriented, adaptive, and proactive with strong client service focus.

TRAVEL:

  • Up to 30% local/regional travel for site visits and customer meetings.
