Compost Queen PBC, an award-winning public benefit corporation based in Fort Collins, is hiring 2–4 part-time Compost Technicians to join our team. We are on a mission to fight climate change through food waste recycling and soil health. If you enjoy hands-on, outdoor work and want to make an impact in your community, we’d love to meet you.
Position Overview
Compost Technicians are responsible for collecting food scraps from homes and businesses, transporting them safely, and helping process compost at our partner farms. You will “own” a fixed route on the same day(s) each week, driving one of our light utility trucks (early 2000's Ford Ranger). This is a physical, outdoor role that requires reliability, attention to detail, and a commitment to sustainability.
Responsibilities
- Drive a service route for residential and commercial accounts (6–8 hours per shift).
- Collect, weigh, and record food waste buckets.
- Safely unload materials at local farm processing sites.
- Assist with compost processing and quality control.
- Clean and sanitize buckets.
- Perform manual decontamination of compost loads.
- Safely operate tractors and wheel loaders (full training provided).
- Engage politely with customers and community members.
Requirements
- Must be 18+ years old.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (no CDL required).
- Ability to lift and carry 50–75 pounds repeatedly.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Availability for Thursday & Friday (8 AM - 4:30 PM)
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
- Willingness to work independently and unsupervised.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Tolerance of odors and physical labor.
Compensation & Growth
- Training Period (2-6 routes): $15.50/hr.
- Level I Technician: $16/hr after training.
- Compensation evaluation at 90 days.
- Compost Technician II (tractor-certified, fully independent): $18/hr.
- All employees receive complimentary composting service.
- Safety equipment provided: shirts, high visibility vest, sunscreen, eyewear, ear and head protection.
