Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

As a Mechanical Engineer for the SPARC Shielding, you will be responsible for design and analysis of the components that are suitable for neutron shielding within the SPARC Systems. You will work closely with CFS neutronic analysis team to verify sufficiency of the design, as well as the owners of the systems hosting the shielding elements.

This team member will:

  • Develop the preliminary design and perform the structural analysis using Ansys
  • Support procurement in the preparation and execution of the manufacturing contracts
  • Travel to vendors to review the progress and resolve any issues
  • Develop technical specifications, assembly procedures and documentation necessary to fabricate and install the parts
  • Work closely with design team and maintain regular contact with the selected vendors to provide them with necessary technical support
  • Enforce observance of the required quality standards and securing documentation and processing of the NCR’s
  • Be instrumental in understanding best practices and effective support of the manufacturing process
  • Offer insight and creative ideas about designed features and machining processes that can meet the basic requirement, with quality, cost of manufacturing and lead time in mind

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or above
  • 5+ years' of engineering design and analysis experience
  • Experience with measurement systems, such as CMM, laser tracker, metrology and scanning tools for dimensional verification of machined components, as well as spatial measurements is critical to your success
  • Experience with machine shop environment and precision machining of high strength and tough materials
  • Familiarity with CAM process/software and G code is highly desirable. Any exposure to welding processes is a bonus
  • Advanced cad skills in NX, both in modeling and drawings; understanding of GD&T and spatial tolerancing on digital measurement systems are necessary
  • Able to communicate effectively in a team and a fast-paced environment, making well informed decisions

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience with selection and use of Neutron shielding materials
  • Exposure to welding processes
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
  • #LI-Hybrid
